Charging for both ways (taxis)...
Sorry.. this must be a stupid question but I have to ask cause it`s been bothering me
Is it right for the taxis and autorickshaws to charge you also for the return kilometres. I mean... we had to take an autorick for this 30 km journey and he wanted to get payed for the return also. So that makes 60km`s * 4,5 rupees and not just 30 km`s * 4,5 rupees... In Finland we only pay for those kilometres that we travel with the taxi. So is this right??

Look within the metropolitan area taxis or autos are supposed to take one way fare only. In case you are going out of the city or something they may claim a return fare too. Again what ever be the rule some drivers will ask for extra if u r going to a place from where he might not get a passanger for his return trip.... any way he would take this plea to claim his return fare!!!

Its not really right for autos and taxis to charge you for return. However, there are some fixed hours - from midnight to 5.00a.m., I think - where they are authorised to charge you half the return fare, in addition to the one way fare.
Someone currently in Mumbai will provide a better answer.

like most of the the others have pointed out, it all depends on whether the the the driver can get a return fare in a reasonable time frame after dropping you off. However, he should indicate the "double meter" charge before you engage him. And ofcourse, there are unscrupulous drivers who will try to charge you double any time they can get away with it.

30Km!!!!!!
Autos make their money out of quick city hops, dropping you in places there is at least a chance of a return fare. For 30 Kms, expect to be charged for return as well.

You're lucky they use meters.
Rs4.5 per KM would be luxury. ![]()

I agree. They usually charge for the return trip unless you are hiring out of an airport etc where there is a fixed fee. If you are going to a popular place and there should be people coming the other way you can probably negotiate.
Sounds to me you have a reasonable person. I always try and be a bit generous with these as they dont make much money and need some compensation for not being rip off merchants which some others are! |

Hey
Legally you are supposed to charge by the meter. In Mumbai atleast post 12am to 5am there is a night charge which is mentioned in the rate chart. You should insist to see and rate card and pay accordingly. Other cities there is quite a bit of overcharging as compared to Mumbai. cheers Amar |

My advice is to discuss this beforehand with your driver. My experience is mainly in non-metropolitan areas and at times if I was getting taken to some out of the way place, especially in the evening, they would want return fare. Often they would offer to wait and give me the return trip for cheaper than the fare was in the first place.
