Chandigarh to Manali by day bus or taxi
Delhi to Manali in one long bus trip doesn't really appeal - an afternoon train trip to Chandigarh, a good night's sleep there and a bus or taxi to Manali the following morning look better. The scenery in daytime is another reason to want to go by day bus not night bus. So...
Anyone know the a/c deluxe bus timetable from Chandigarh to Manali? What would it cost to hire an a/c taxi from Chandigarh to Manali? Many thanks. |

HRTC runs an A/C volvo bus from Delhi to Manali, via Chandigarh. It leaves Chandigarh at midnight and reaches Manali at 10=0 a.m. The best scenery on the route begins from Mandi, which the bus departs at 06=00, so you'll be able to view the same.

Thanks Shimla.
We're going trekking out of Manali in late June, so I wanted to get to Manali the easiest way without spending a sleepless night on a bus. The plan is to catch the 3.40pm train from Delhi, arrive Chandigarh 8pm, have a good night's sleep and (hopefully) catch a morning bus to Manali, departing Chandigarh after an early breakfast. If buses don't leave for Manali at that time we may hire a taxi. Somehow we'd arrive in Manali before sundown. Hmmm... maybe the midnight a/c volvo bus wouldn't be so bad after all. We could hop on the bus right from Delhi instead of taking the shatabdi, but 16 hours on a bus might be tougher than some of the passes we're going to climb. Decisions, decisions... |

Yes, you can take a morning bus from Chandigarh to Manali, but your entire day will be spent in transit. Again, I'm not too sure if deluxe A/C coaches operate between Chandigarh and Manali during the day time.
What I'd suggest is this : Take the evening Shatabdi Express from Delhi to Chandigarh, then board the A/C volvo at midnight, after your night meal . This way you reduce bus travel to a minimum, do not waste the entire day in transit; and still see the best scenery during the morning hours. |

I like your suggestion, that's what we'll do. I'll email HPTDC and reserve seats on the volvo. HTRC's website is down anyway.
Cheers! |

Night Bus Manali - Amritsar
Is there a direct night bus from Manali to Amritsar (Lonely Planet mentions a 14 hour bus)? What kind of bus? Departure and Arrival schedules? Where can it be booked?
