the driver is the least expensive part of the rental- usually cheaper to keep.

Self-drive is pretty uncommon. Having a driver means you also have a guide, emissary, translator, etc.--very useful.

eek!

Also, have you been to India? It's in a class by itself when it comes to driving. Drivers come out of intersections without looking. Animals are everywhere. So are potholes. People drive with their high beams. Pedestrians don't look. There are all sorts of carriages on the road. The honking is deafening. Trucks and buses are in bad shape, and they claim the right of way and force you off the road.
I have driven myself all over Thailand, the Andes, Morocco, Istanbul, Paris, Catania, the Dominican Republic, and I would never drive in India. Motorcycles and bicycles are a better way to get around, if you want independence.

Yes. For driving in India you need the ‘skill’. If you can drive in Calcutta, well you can drive anywhere in the world. Go for a Bullet motorbike.

This is story told to me by one of my buddies recently traveling by a taxi in the south. The driver jumped the red signal (road was empty).
Suddenly from nowhere a traffic cop appeared in front and stopped the car.
“Cant you see that the signal was red?” shouted the cop
“I’ve noticed the red signal but never seen you standing here to catch!!” was the graceful answer by the driver.

By the way have you ever tried a roller costar ride without a seat belt on? You can say yes if you have traveled Delhi- Chandigarh by bus.
