No idea Haylo, but I will say this from my Delhi driving experience: because traffic in Delhi is so bad you rarely go very fast so it's not actually scary at all. Even the larger faster roads are alright because there's lots of room- you just stick to your path and let everyone else weave around however they like. It is intense though. You need to really really concentrate hard, especially on roundabouts where no-one knows what the hell is going on, and anywhere where there's people. Assume all of them are suicidal.

I think I'd quite like Delhi driving lessons too. When are you going there again?

That is a good starting point. I'm used to riding a motorbike, so am used to viewing everyone else on the road as either incompetent fools or homicidal maniacs.

Driving in uber-rural roads in Wales, or even in England, is a good preparation for knowing exactly how wide your car is! On a recent trip, my partner's daughter, who is used to driving in North America, asked why there were so many one way roads in the country!

I'm planning to return for November, fancy "hitting the streets" together?

Have you ever driven down the road past Llanthony Priory towards Hay on Wye? http://www.castlewales.com/llantho.html

It's a real nightmare, can't see round the next bend, couldn't get out of the way if you wanted to. Worth it for the views though.

I was planning to go to India in December, but since I am shortly to be happily jobless I've been toying with moving the date forwards. Mind you, I need to get a new passport and then visa before I can do anything. Hmmm. I'll get back to you on that idea.

Yes, I have done that exact road not long ago, I took Mr Haylo (sorry, I mean dukkha) down to Llantony before he left for Delhi, it's not a long drive from where I am in Worcestershire.

I do agree, it is a slightly more "interesting than usual road". Umm... That day, thanks to the joys of SatNav, we also ended up on a road that was technically public highway, but incredibly narrow and suspiciously also had signs saying "Offa's Dyke Path"

Offtopic, but Hay on Wye is somewhere else I took him, it's fantastic for booklovers isn't it? I also regularly take visitors to the 12th Century Kilpeck Church. Among other carvings, the Sheela Na Gig is one of the very best examples, though depending on how well I know someone, and how easily shocked they are, I do sometimes let them discover that for themselves!

Recommendation for car rental with driver, Delhi

Dear IM Family,

Am in Delhi for a week, and looking for a car rental (with driver), at a reasonable rate. I'd like to rent by the day, and at this point it looks like I will need the rental for 3 days. I can be picked up in South Delhi.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks, IM family !!

You can ask the hotel people where you are staying or you can arrange one through the Radio Cabs - see this thread here:

Radio Cabs / Dial-a-Cab in Delhi
Off the top of my head a daily rate is between 900 - 1200 rupees for a car hire.
In Chanakyapuri near the small local market there are standing taxis - I've used these quite often and they are reliable with meters. I think they would also do a daily rate - the contact nos. for them are 011-26886051, 26114969, 26877388; Mobiles - 09810058913, 09810353914
The name of this group is 'Dhanoa Tourist Taxi Service'

So there is a big difference between driving a car and riding a bike. Driving a car is generally considered insane, but riding a bike common... even though you are much more exposed on a bike!

I have a friend in Bangladesh whom I am going to visit in September. He told me to drive his car once I am there in Dhaka, he considers himself a bad driver and me a good one. Is Bdesh different from India?
