Car or train from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer?
My wife and I have been offered a taxi trip from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer for 3000Rs non-AC - previously we were going to take an early morning train.
Any opinions on whether to train or taxi it - and is this a good price offered? Cheers Whippet |

I also was wondering what the answer to this question might be. My family is getting the train experience going from Jaisalmer to Jaipur and from Agra to Varanasi. I've been told (by not so reliable sources) to hire a car and driver from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, enjoy the long drive and countryside, and miss the touts at the train station.

As far as scenery is concerned, this has got to be one of the worst in India, very boring.
The people in 2nd class on the train made up for this though. I doubt the taxi journey would be any more scenic, though it may be quicker. |

I've done some long taxi trips myself and am sure I was charged too much, but the driver probibly had a good couple of days out of the extra money, and I'd have just thrown it away on something else. On the other hand....If you added Rs3000 to your hotel budget for Jaisalmer (or somewhere else), it would make a hell of a difference. I can't remember your budget, but a Rs1500 a night hotel is so much more comfortable than a Rs500 a night hotel, especially when you've been touring for a couple of weeks. |

If I have to choose from those option, I'll sure choose to go by train.Reason is Satyajit Roy for the bengali movie "Sonar Kella". ![]() I never forget the scene of chasing the train, while on camel. Anyway, this is my personal feeling.

I'd go the train too, very comfortable and you can still see the landscape if you'd like to.
I really like the arid landscape personally, but I wouldn't bother hiring a car to experience it more ![]() |
