Dear all,
Ok, it is decided...I am making this trip to South India next aug (Tamil Nadu, as I won't have much time and as we wanna fly to Malé for a relaxing week after). As we would like to bypass the tour operators, which are offering packets where no freedom of choice is allowed, we were thinking of hiring a car together with a driver. Has anyone some references to share with us, possibly reachable via web/e-mail? Any persons who were found reliable and so on??? This would be of much help for us...We were thinking about an itinerary of 10-12 days from Chennai to Trivandrum across all the temples.

Cara Federica, we have done this, my husband and myself three years ago. That is, we got a flight to Chennai and then did the whole journey to Trivandrum in 15 days. Each town we got to, we stopped for 2-3 nights. The day of our departure we arranged another taxi which took us to the new destination. It worked out very well and was very cheap : 4 rupias per km. Make up the distance and contract hard. Easy to do. Plenty of taxis and drivers in the hotels vicinity. If you need any more info please do so. Have a nice time ! Lorenza

I just arrived from Rajasthan and Agra. It was , wonderful, GREAT!
A beautiful trip

Compass Tours arranged a package with tours and driver. The driver was the same for all the trip, 14 days, and I have a different guide on each town.

But they can offer just the driver, or anything you want (hotels, tours, etc) They do as you want it, and you can stay the time you want, the driver is available at night if you want to go to other places

They operate in Delhi in Rajasthan, but not sure what other India places.

Once u reach Chennai u can try,this travels,last November i availed there car&driver for Andrapredesh trip.
I can say they are realiable as i used there service offten.
They dont have web address,u can fax.
