Hi,
I am planning to go from Rishikesh to Gangotri in a day. Would be reaching rishikesh early in the morning by train. Is it possible to find cabs from Rishikesh to gangotri(and how much would it cost.. )? That too early in the morning...? How long would it take to reach gangotri by a bus?thanks... |

there are buses that leave Rishikesh extremely early in the morning (think like 6-7 AM). i think a taxi is also possible, but i'm not sure it's something you could arrange before arriving.
any good guidebook will have a rundown of the process of getting from Rishikesh to Gangotri or any of the other Char Dam sites. from my reading up on it, it seems like something that needs to be arranged a day or so in advance. but i haven't been yet -- this is just my research in advance of my own trip in a few months. who knows what it looks like on the ground... |

thanks Opoponax!!!
I actually did some reading up but could not figure out how long it takes by bus. Cabs and all are readily available upto uttarkashi and after that One needs to change or either take a bus. So was wondering if somebody knows if its possible to get direct cabs. thanks.. cheers... ![]() |

at least 7-8 hours, if my memory serves correctly. maybe 10? it's a long and mountainous ride.
it's a common enough tourist site that you might be able to glean some info from people's travel blogs and the like, if nobody experienced happens along to clarify matters. |

I was in Rishikesh in March and made friends with a local shopkeeper named Deepak. Deepak arranged several private cars/taxis for myself and our group and we were very pleased with the drivers we got. He owns Hanumant Gems and Handicrafts near the taxi stand at Shivananda Nagar, Muni-Ki-Reti. His email is hanumantgems@yahoo.com. I'm sure he could help you. Tell him you were referred by his American friend "Mr Sticky".
