Buying Vintqage (30+ year old) Enfield in India
Hello
I wish to purchase one if no two 30+ year old Enfield, 1977 model or earlier for shipping back to Europe (Ireland). Can anyone advise as to which is the better model 350cc or 500cc? I have heard reports that old 500cc models are inferior to the old 350cc models, is this true? I am planning a trip to India in October to purchase a bike, travel for sometime in India and then ship it home. Due to regulations in Ireland it makes more economic sense for me to buy a motorbike that is 30+ years old. I am willing to buy an old model bike and pay for it to be re-conditioned to a good standard. Can you advise as to how much time that this process may take? All advice is greatly appreciated Best wishes eldon |

If I am not mistaken there was only the 350 model available in India way back in the 70s. I never owned a 350 or 500 but I had a much used small brother of the 350 called Enfield 200. It was a two stroke engined small bike probably designed by Indian engineers. It cannot even be compared to the 350s but I had lots of fun with it after modifying the engine. I shaved the head to increase compression and lightened the fly wheel.
Look for a used bike which has a single owner and maintained well. Sometimes you will find bikes which havent been used much even after decades. Reconditioning should not take much time unless there is some machine shop job to be done or involves lot of repainting and chromplating. If the mechanical work and other work like repainting is done simultaneously about two weeks time should be sufficient. Spares are easily available in the large cities and if you hunt around you will find an inexpensive mechanic located in a small lane somewhere. Though their workshops may not be impressive they will be highly skilled and experienced. You should be cautious about buying spare parts which are not genuine or the manufacturer is not an Original Equipment supplier to the company. Even critical parts like bearings are often found in original packing but they will be fakes. Unless you know the mechanic you are always liable to be duped with fake or sub standard quality parts. |

it should be easily available..there are lopt of old bikes around and there are dealers who actually refurbish them acording to needs of Europeans and help in the entire process of exporting them from India as well..
if in Delhi, try Karol Bagh.. |
