the high speed catamaran has not run since 1997; the information in the first link is incorrect/outdated. The service was rather expensive and became irrelevant when the Konkan railway was completed and cut several hours off the old inland train route. There is a convenient overnite sleeper train and several daytime expresses including a fairly fast Janshatabdi which leaves Mumbai (LTT station) at 5:35 arriving Madgaon at 13:30.

There are also regular night buses for a truly unpleasant alternative

The ferries, in the 70s, were lots of fun, but I guess it was the catamaran that replaced those.

I have a similar query: I'll be traveling from Haridwar to Varanasi this December, and a friend recommended that I do part of the trip by boat. I have not heard of Ganges river passenger transport--does this actually exist?
