Hi All,
I wonder if it's possible to take a bicycle (in a box) on Kalka-Shimla toy train? I suppose it's doesn't really matters whether it's bicycle or not, but is it possible to take a very big cardboard box on the train? Did any one do this? Thanks, Danny

People travel in the water tank coach on the Kalka Shimla train.
So I guess it really doesn't matter. If possible check out Barog on the route. |

Do you plan to check out Barog?
If you would leave it near the entrance of the coach someone else may walk off with it. The ordinary coaches are small but you can carry anything as long as you can fit it inside. Or else sit with it near the entrance. Traveling on the door of a train is quite common, even I do it But if you are not used to it sit back and don't lean out and be extra careful in the tunnels. Also Kalka is a small station, if all else fails, talk to the station master or someone. |

Barog is nice, but my destination is Shimla, from where I'll cycle to Manali via Spiti. I love trying by the door, but I plan on taking the train straight after I arrive to India (Shatabdi to Kalka) so not sure that this is a good idea, I think might fall out ![]() And is it possible at all to travel by the door? It's AC coach , the seats are marked i think. I'll do try my best though.. Maybe bribe the driver and put it there ![]() cityMONK, Did you see trains with bicycles on toy train? Sounds like a dangerous undertaking, considering there're so many tunnels... |

i said delhi bound trains, not toy ones. why to travel from kalka to shimla on toy train with cycle in hand.why not to cycle all the way to shimla from kalka,or do what we did as kids , uphill by bus with cycles on roof of bus and downhill riding cycles.that way it would be more practical. i recommend a bus journey with bike on rooftop. ![]() |

If you can't take it by the train then you can surely take it by the bus. Just have to put it on the top of the bus.
On Shatabdi there is space to store the luggage at the rear of the coach. If you can't take it on the toy train ditch it then and as a last resort take it by bus. Cycling to Manali via Spiti sounds like such a great idea. Look at the threads at the end of this page the first query is similar to yours. Also I remember someone have asked before about carrying oversized suitcases on the Shatabdi express train. You can try searching for that thread. |

There should be a luggage van in the Shimla Toy Train. I had seen one on the Ooty Toy Train as well as the Matheran Toy Train.

cityMONK: I have 23 days in India, and i want to make Shimla - spiti - Manali circle. I really prefer to start Shimla at 2000 m altitude and not kalka... If I had more time I might consider it
... And maybe I will ride on the roof of a bus, my train ticket on Himalayan Queen is currently WL20 .. I have till 25th Sept to get AVAILABLE ![]() mridula: thanks for info on Shatabdi bonded: I really hope the situation is the same with KLK -SIM train.. Thank you guys!! mridula |

Hey I think that is (25 Sept) around the start of a long weekend in India for a festival called Dusshera. So Shimla would be crowded. WL 20 may prove tricky.
And when you have done it all, don't forget to share a few pictures with us. |
