$145 Jodpur to Udiapur via Ranakpur?

Does this sound right for a driver to take us from Jod to Udiapur for 2 people? We got the quote from Namaste Tours.
Thanks!
Sounds expensive to me for one destination.

Depends on the Car, whether AC or not and whether it includes return.

$145 (~5000 Rs) could be expensive in a Tata Indica Non-AC - but its okay for an Air Conditioned Qualis.

Remember Jodhpur to Udaipur is a fair distance - are you doing it in one day? Also any tour company will charge for return trip even if you go only one way as the car has to come back.

Hi Laneelee,

we are doing the same journey by car in a few months and the people I am staying with in Jodhpur told me that they can book us a car (non A/C as it wont be hot when we are in India) for the exact journey for 3200 rupees, which is way under $145 you were quoted. I am assured this includes all (return of the driver, petrol....and whatever else ).

Hope that is of help.

3200 Rs for a Non-AC car sounds ok. But its not way under $145 - and for an AC Qualis type car (which has about 10 times the space and comfort level of an Indica / Maruti 800) $145 is a good deal.

Falna is about 40 Kms from Ranakpur, get a train then a taxi, and then get a bus or taxi from Ranakpur to Udaipur.

Train 9112 departs Jodhpur daily at 06:15 and gets to Falna at 09:53 (2A, SL.)

Train 4707 departs Jodhpur daily at 15:15 and gets to Falna at 18:33 (2A, 3A, SL.)

2-tier air con (2A) = Rs 472
3-tier air con (3A) = Rs 281
Sleeper class (SL) = Rs 121 (not air con)

Going the other way.

Train 4708 departs Falna daily at 06:03 and gets to Jodhpur at 10:05 (2A, 3A, SL.)

Train 9111 departs Falna daily at 16:58 and gets to Jodhpur at 20:05 (2A, SL.)

Youre paying for 600 km (300 km Jodhpur to Udaipur and empty return for the car another 300 km). For an Ac Qualis the rate is about Rs 8 per km. For an Indica or an Ac Ambassador this should should be about Rs 6 per km. $145 is way too high.

If you are hiring the car for one day only, a fair price for an air-con car would be about INR 4000/-, or a little less! This is all inclusive (return kilometres also added). Dessy's hotel in Jodhpur has quoted a reasonable price.

In 2003, I paid 2,400 Rs for a two-day trip from Udaipur via Khumbalghar and Ranakpur to Jodhpur, in a brand-new non-AC Ambassador.

I hired it from the "Multi Shop" in Lalghat in Udaipur and got this price with very little haggling. Petrol prices have gone up since, as may have taxes, so I guess the 3,000-4,000 Rs range quoted above is probably fair.

It's worth taking your time for this lovely drive and breaking it somewhere in between.

Check your numbers - Jodhpur to Udaipur via Ranakpur is more likely to be near 450 KM and do not forget that the two way trip cannot be done in one day - it will take two days.

Therefore there is the small matter of night halt allowance for the driver as well.
@8 Rs/Km, even for a 700 KM round-trip (350 one-way - though its more like 450 KM in reality) the fare alone will be Rs 5600 - add to that 300 Rs for the night halt - its Rs 5900( USD 138 @ 43 Rs/USD).

we paid 1900 for a one way trip for two people (last month), but it was an accident. I happened to use a phone in a shop, and was three way speaking with my boyfriend about the quote, the shop keeper listened and then bettered the price we had been quoted, which was 2000. I think its worth checking with tourist agents in the town or at your hotel when you get there. Our car was the small new tourist car with no ac, it was a hot day, but we just wound down thw windows! I should mention we made up for the cheap rate with a huge tip cos the driver was great and drove really calmly because I was a little nervous and tired. Before we left we got quotes of 3000- 5000 depending on the ac or not.

We have not given any quotes for a Jodphur to Udaipur trip. Nor would we as we are a small Delhi based company and the cars we use are all Delhi cars. All our trips originate in Delhi. We assume she/he has been communicating with Namaste Tours as opposed to us--Namaste India Tours. If anyone asks us to quote for this kind of trip, we simply suggest they arrange it through their hotel wherever they are staying, be it Jodphur or wherever.
