I loved that book , have read it 3 times since i have got it. Being someone who has more than 10 retrievers in the imm family, that book really hit me.

LOL, iwanttogoback! Scando - I read Birdsong a couple of years ago and thought it excellent - will look out for the other titles.
WWUSA - yes, The Ghost Road I thought was the best of her writing, the way she switched 'voices' and Billy Prior's diary plus the Melanesia accounts. For me, it was the easiest read, the first one was very concentrated, the second less so, but the 3rd somehow I read quite quickly and really enjoyed it. I thought her writing style had matured and picked up by the last novel.

I always take a book or two on holiday and read them both....
the last in Greece was Da Vincy Code and a Wilbur Smith both fat books.

Took 2 to Goa and read the first few chapters on the plane and still have not finished one.....there was too much to look at and do while there!

I have now had the same book on 3 holidays and have to read back to get the jist of it........going to Spain next week and hope to finish the bloomin' thing.

Cant read back all the thread so what one book would would you say is a good read / story about India? or set in India?

ok, slightly higher up the literary chain than m&b, but right now it suits my mood - trying to simplify and slow my life down. somehow, reading lightweight novels seems to help.

i am, however, making notes of the more 'literary' suggestions here for when i feel it's time to make an intellectual effort.

I can't help but notice you spend quite some time here, so I can't really see why not.

There are other threads on Indian literature as well.

C'mon, scroll around some Really, all the usual suspects (and many unusual ones) will be there on existing threads.

yeah, read the whole thread, there are so many wonderful recommendations.

but i tend to agree with wwusa - 'a suitable boy' is probably my favourite novel set in india.

I beg to differ with wwusa and iwanttogoback but I thought it was tiring, even though I trudged through it in the hope of finding redemption somewhere at the end of it. Nada. I did enjoy V.Seth's The Golden Gate and it might have had an influence on why I didn't like TSB.

Here's my list of fav. books set in India:
The God of Small Things - Arundathi Roy
The Moors Last Sigh - S.Rushdie
The Far Pavilions - M.M.Kaye

and the mother of them all
A Passage to India - E.M.Forster

I am currently reading 'Five point Someone' - Chetan Bhagat and its good fun so far.

Puchoo - I'd go for Emily Bronte over Ludlum anyday!! Ali-Monbeam - for South Indian novels/short stories you can't beat R.K. Narayan's Malgudi books - Malgudi Days is a collection of short stories.
