Currently on Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fford.
Kind of fantasy collides with literature, with a pinch of scifi in the mix. Second book in the series. It's fun.

I LOVE the whole Thursday Next Series.
I don't even wait for these to come out in paperback, and that's saying something for me. You should check out his website: a collection of rabid fans, contests, etc. Just as quirky and fun as his books. He's on my list of Authors I'd Like To Meet.Note to karuna and seren (forgive me if I miss others): he has a 'soft spot' for Wales. btw: Fforde is the spelling, just in case someone needs to know. |

I really enjoyed all the Fforde's that I have read. I turned to them in between some pretty heavy and depressing reads. I am now reading On Beauty by Zadie Smith and just finished The Bonfire of the Vanities.

So, you're back to depressing with On Beauty, then. Well, not depressing as much as sullied, vacuous; probably her intention though. That's my take on it anyway.
Fforde's are definitely good escape books. Last edited by chAos : Apr 8th, 2008 at 04:04. Reason: added info |

I am halfway through "This Cold Heaven" by Gretel Ehrlich. It is a book about Greenland and is so dense with beauty of the human soul and natural world, poetry, starkness, a good portion of darkness- both the long dark winter and the darkness found in the human being, incessant sun and beyond imagining cold. Peppered with humor and fascination.
Makes my complaints about cold weather here at home ludicrous.

Have been reading Vikram Seth's "Two Lives" 2005. The lives described are of Seth's great uncle and aunt, Shanti Uncle and Aunty Henny with whom the author lived in Britain as a youth.
This combined memoir, biography and history has been very widely and favorably reviewed. I enjoy Seth's writing even if he sometimes writes at a length greater than his reader's enthusiasm. Seth's uncle, a WWII British Army dentist, was wounded at Monte Cassino. By great coincidence, my own uncle, a New Zealand Army dentist, served at the same time at Monte Cassino but happily was unharmed. Last edited by unclelach : Apr 8th, 2008 at 11:36. Reason: Clarity |

Sounds good, Shashank. For my plane travels, I had a much battered copy of Somerset Maugham's 'Far Eastern Travels' (short stories)- just the ticket for filling in time. Now in Oz and what joy! My friend had the latest in Alexander McCall Smith's Ladies Detective Agency series - 'Blue Shoes and Happiness". Now reading it with much pleasure.

I just finished reading 'Into Thin Air' by Jon Krakauer. This is one book that is going to remain with me for a long long time. The Everest tragedy of 1996 is the backdrop of the book.
Before that I had finished reading Eiger Dreams by Krakauer and I liked it so much (I am anyway partial to mountains) that I searched for Into Thin Air. |

Kabul Beauty School, by Deborah Rodriguez.
She's not a beautiful writer, but the story is interesting, and I learned a little about Afghanistan in it; it's a true story. what struck me the most was that the main person was Uniquely situated to meet a need, to fulfill a destiny that she had no way of knowing before-hand, she couldn't prepare for. And that the very thing that Qualified her was something considered by herself, as well as others, to be a Flaw, a Weakness. That, combined with the willingness to make certain choices, I don't know how to put this: to live intentionally as possible while able to change course when it happens to present itself, making choices not based on fear. A very good read. ![]() |

Rory Stewart's story of his walk through the country very shortly after the Taliban were toppled in 2002(?)...very good stuff and one of a kind. Also: Blue is the colour of Heaven by Richard Loseby. Another walk thru Afghanistan but a rather different tale. Also very good stuff. Last edited by brownboy66 : Apr 9th, 2008 at 19:41. Reason: merged sequential posts |
