She (not Aishah, who also must be obeyed ) is a heap of melodramatic nonsense.

It's fun.

I'll probably go on to read the sequel as well, well I'm at it!

Have to confess this 'she' also has some of that attribute from time to time! Also confessing, I have never read H.Ryder Haggard (can't be bothered checking this name for accuracy) at least i don't think so, could have read one in the dim, dark ages years ago as a pre-teen! And perhaps one day I will, just out of curiosity. My brother read all the books at a time when I was more interested in American imports to our local library - all involving pre-pubescent relationships and that American word 'dating'! The funny thing about these hardcovered books were that they smelt terrible - something to do with the glue.

Sure, this is a kid's book. I believe he wrote it because he was unimpressed with Treasure Island and thought he could do better. He can't; his writing is nowhere near that of R. L. Stevenson.

Another kid's book that I didn't read until later in life, is Kim. I remember lending it to someone who was most disapointed; I think she was expecting some deep analysis of international affairs in India at the time. Surely, if not this one, she must, at least, have seen films based on such novels by Rudyard Kipling? A really first-rate yarn, with plenty for grown ups to enjoy too --- if they let themselves.

Hi Solo! I won't be back to Delhi until early April - Jaisalmer started to get hot then yesterday and today I think a nice cooler change has arrived. It's very pleasant. Yes, Bill Bryson is very funny and clever!
Nick - Now Kim - there's a book I really want to read again and will in the near future! I think Kipling is marvellous for his era. And did you have to learn 'If' in your poetry lessons at school too?

If you can keep your head
When all around are losing theirs
Then you have probably misunderstood the situation...

Indeed! And for all the stirring, patriotic stuff, some of Kipling's poetry is very anti-war.

Sorry Nick but I am LOL here - it's just a nice spelling mistake (intentional??) I think you mean 'losing' - what you have written means people are unscrewing their bolts and starting to take their heads off!!

Some geniuses can't spell either - it means nothing. My best friend from way back (we were in school from kindergarten!),a very clever scientist, couldn't spell for peanuts. I kind of liked your original version...

Just purchased, unabridged "The Hungry Tide" at the local library deaccession sale for $1.00 . I think many libraries are getting rid of their bulky audio cassette inventory - as they are now obsolete and take up way too much precious room as well.

.... those audio books are a nice compliment for jogging/exercising - long drives!

I'm about half-way through. It's had its moments, but I think books are less frightening than movies. Maybe that's one reason I prefer them! One can limit one's intake, and perhaps even put a cap on one's imagination.

Although I'd agree with the person who said, "I prefer radio to television; the pictures are better"; as a child I always preferred radio plays to to TV films, my own pictures were much more vivid.

imagine a black and white hollywood 50s B movie, complete with the cultural insensitivity and over acting that tend to go with them. for a young child it was quite terrifying.

like you, i see images as i read and listen to stories, and they are very vivid. and much better than most directors manage.
