Interesting post, kallikrates - will try your recommendations sometime- if I can find them! Haven't read Anita Brookner, again available in the book exchange so can get, brings to mind another Anita - Anita Shreve - quite like her writing. I read Resistance, saw The Ship Captain's Wife as a movie - was good. I never quite took to The Guide - supposed to be Narayan's classic and is studied in schools in Delhi (friend's daughter lent me her copy) - I prefer his Malgudi ones, more sense of humour in them which I like.

Rereading The Other Side of Silence... Voices from the Indian partition, but Urvashi Butalia.
Moving account. A must read specially for any Indian whose family was hit in 1947, and specially if the family was split up. |

A Million Little Pieces- James Frey. A memoir of an Drug addict and a alcoholic, a telling account and somehow touching and Humane. A tad repetitive, but potrays the life of an addict quite well. This bloke can write.
Next Up- Road less Travelled -Scott M Peck. Aishah- Sad to say this, but the High rises have become a way of life in Mysore these days.It would soon be a 'was a lovely city". |

There is a great book out now about the Nizam's of Hyderabad it's called The Last Nizam by John Zubrzycki. Fasinating read. Tells the story of the Nizams and how the last Nizam lost the worlds biggest fortune.

Completed Never Let me go- Kazuo Ishiguro. A Good story-teller and this Book is quite a compelling read. I won't tell you anything about the plot as it would spoil half the fun.

Holy Cow
Started with Holy Cow finaly (bought it months ago)... its a nice read but I feel that at times Sarah has exagerated things...she seems to be hating staying in India though she does linger on for quite a good time for her love..but then hey if she could move to India for love..cudnt her Love move back to SYDNEY when she was so upset abt almost everything here?..

Batistuta - must add that title and look out for it - Ishiguro is a brilliant writer - glad you didn't tell the plot. Barkha - I think they are all back in Australia now! The book is a few years old, I thought it was quite funny at times, she had a sort of love-hate relationship with India I think.

Just completed 'Daughter of Tibet' by Rinchen Dolma Taring. First ever english autobiography by any Tibetian. Notwithstanding the simple english writing style, makes for a fascinating reading of culture, beliefs, lifestyle and agony of Tibet.
http://www.amazon.com/Daughter-Tibet.../dp/0861710444 Looking forward to get my hands on 'Freedom in Exile' by Dalai Lama
