Where can I find Bollywood movie w/ subtitles in the U.S?

I'd like to see about 5-10 good Bollywood movies with English subtitles.

I live in the greater Washington DC area and would like to find a place that rents DVDs.

BTW, any reccommendations on movies? I've heard about Dil Se...

I would especially like films that show the India that I will experience on my first trip there.

Thanks!

Echo,

Try Netflix -- they rent over the net for a fixed monthly fee -- http://www.netflix.com/SubGenre?sgid=342&pgid=326

The good thing is that the moview are rated by viewers and you can pick the good ones. They have one month free offer by invitation. All I need is your email address..

I would recommend these movies......

Lagan .... The time shown in the movie is a century before the indipendence of India. It's an intresting one featuring the first ever cricket match played by India

Devadas ...... Tells the story of an Indian Romeo mad in love .It's an old story from the time of the Maharaja's

Satya.... Features the story of the under world in Bombay [mumbai] . Not the top level dons, but the life of the bottum line people involved in .
It's one of the master pieces of a most successful Director in Bollywood

.......... to be continued

Satya, Gangster flick, very highly rated film.
Company, Another Gangster flick by the same people behind Satya
Sholay, Bollywood western
Devdas,
Vastaav, Another gangster flick.

If you fancy a Punjabi Film try Shaheed e Mohabbat, excellent film based on a true story, centred around partition.

I never really found Lagaan to interesting. The story was very predictable.

Talking DC has Indian Video Rental Stores!!

Hi there -- I know of at least three Indian video rental stores in Arlington (Lee Hwy near Glebe/George Mason) -- there must be some in Silver Spring as well. In addition to the true video rental places, check out the back of the Indian grocery stores. If still no success, your friendly Blockbuster assuredly has a few, including Lagaan!

You can also buy them from Nehaflix:

I've used them before and recommend it.

Yes, "Dil Se" is one of the best.

Bollywood films available

I have used indiaplaza.com. They have the most fantastic selection of films and they specify which films are subtitled (almost all are). They only sell DVDs where you have an option for subtitles in English or French. Downside: with S&H, is a bit expensive.

indiaplaza cutomer service is very poor. Still waiting for them to reply to emails I sent them about a faulty DVD several years ago.

Do you have names/addresses?

Does the average Indian video shop have DVD's that are subtitled?

I'd think that they would tend to not be subtitled.

I'd like to try Netflix, as they seem to have quite a few, however, i'd like a selection of true Bollywood flicks, not ones like Lagaan...

Any Bollywood movie made for sale in the US (namely any you would buy at your local Indian video shop, or through sites like Nehaflix or bollywoodflix.com) will have English subtitles. There are many Desis in the US who don't speak Hindi but still love the films.

As for Netflix, they actually have a really large selection of Bollywood films beyond Lagaan, including most of the classics and many of the latest hits. They have a free trial period so I'd encourage you to sign up and check the selection.

I'm not a big Indian movie fan . . . or at least I wasn't until recently.

I really liked Khabi Kushi, Khabi Gam -- it's the kind of movie which makes you all teary eyed (apparently that's how you tell the good ones!)

Also, Thal was pretty good.

Since no one else has mentioned them, here are some suggestions:

Bollywood501.com An excellent primer on Bollywood films, especially the "classics". Also has links to lots more sites. Website by byronic, distiguished member of this forum.

zdag.com Netflix-like service that specializes in Bollywood films. Much greater selection of Indian films than Netflix, although Netflix does carry a few titles that zdag does not. (Zdag carries a lot of titles that Netflix doesn't, though!)

jackpot

Check it out -- movie theaters showing Bollywood movies in your back yard -- you'll have to call and check about whether they have subtitles. One of the links is really old, but if you do some digging I'm sure that there are some places around like this; I'm pretty sure the one in Falls Church is still going strong. Give them a call.

As for Indian videos, many do have subtitles. I am not sure of the names of the places -- I'd suggest that you call a few of the places around 4800 Lee Highway in Arlington to search what you're looking for & see if they have it. There are a few groceries and video rental places in the same ethnic (also has Vietnamese, South American and Carribbean shops) shopping center.

India A-1
Saran Foods

Finally, give these nice folks in Silver Spring a buzz and see what info. they'll share:

India Emporium
6848 New Hampshire Avenue

Silver Spring, Maryland

Tel301)270-3322

Hope this helps
