it strikes me as strange, indian youth's obsession with geriatric rock groups...they are big here and always have sold out performances...i'm not talking old people going to see these...teenagers.

air supply, fleetwood mac, roger waters, just to name a few.

may be some1 has a good explanation!

I think pretty much anyone who dares to tour gets a fab Audiance in India.
A friend went to Jethro Tull in Bangalore said it was amazing with the Indian crowd lapping it up!!

Either that or there's a lot of closet hippies in India!!

The old bands are the only thing you get on the radio (and FM radio is a relatively new phenomenon in India)--that, and the Bollywood stage shows are infinitely more popular.

maybe they just appreciate good music, just like us "old" people with one foot in the grave....

personally I'd put an "old lady" like Tina Turner up against someone like Britney Spears anyday to see who brings the house down...

I am one of those fans, and at least according to me they have the class that current day musicians lack. I find the current day music from the west(may be in the last 5 years) very very crappy and unbearable.

So much that I have stopped listening to anything new now and have even lost the curiosity to see if there is something good. It is pretty much true with people around me too. Since the days rap/reggae/RB and Britney/Shakira clones started ruling the music in the west, I have slowly moved out of it. May be Avril Lavigne is the only bearable of the entire lot in any genre of music.

I am a typical Indian, and so, may be it is the same story with entire India. But not necessarily..

geriatric or not, I can think of very few rock groups in the last two decades which have been as consistently good as some of the 30 year old ones. (Not sure I would classify all the ones mentioned in the OP as excellent groups though.)

maybe thats the reason. or maybe its a generation gap.

like I told my daughter a couple of years ago, when you grow up you will listen to my rock music. She was on Guns and Roses at that time.

She now has grown up :-).

And hey, I went to Mumbai just to watch Anderson (out of Tull) playing with Hari Prasad Chaurasia. Worth it.

oh it's just one of those things, like the Indians' fixation for Ayn Rand, Wodehouse, or 80s menswear...I think they just get stuck at certain points in time..that's all

One of the reasons for them havin sold out performmances might be bcos mainstream pop/rock acts who are in thier prime seldom tour India.
If Red hot chill peppers or COldplay tour India they will also have sell out statiums.Hence Indian youth have to make do with artists who are past thier prime .

Is Keith Richards falling out of a tree(!) wild enough to maintain his rock image?
