I have a harpsichord. Used to be very serious about it and was taken seriously by professionals. But then I started going to India.... Anyway, I still love the instrument but I don't think it would "cross over" very well with tablas or sitars.

I have played the clarinet and assorted saxophones in an orchestra at the university of technology. To give you an idea, we ranged from happy amateurs like me to professional-class musicians. The one rule was: when playing march music, don't walk on time! I also tried an alto clarinet, an oboe, and flutes. I was getting fairly good at the classical guitar.
When I switched careers to be a translator, I sold almost all instruments to finance my first computer: at some $1800, no hard drive (were they even invented?), but a cassette recorder for permanent storeage. Many years later, I had a stroke. The resulting brain infarction affects the precision of my left hand, to the degree that I have given up playing. But I acquired a beautiful bassoon many years ago. Now I've finally had time and money to have it overhauled, and will try it. Hopefully there are pieces that aren't too demanding for the slow hand. That instrument is a real challenge for the right thumb! I also consider taking up the trumpet, but I haven't threatened my neighbours with that idea yet. |

No fixed-pitch instrument really suits Indian classical music --- but that hasn't stopped the harmonium becoming a part of Hindustani music, or people playing classical music on keyboads (don't like it myself, but...)
So I guess harspsichord could be in with a chance there! |

Just recently I was wandering through an auction locally and saw a small drum kit. It consisted of a bass drum with no pedal, a good side drum, and tom tom and some other bits of stands, sticks, a cowbell and some spare skins.
Anyway I bought the lot for AU$14, that's about 6 pounds. I added to this a set of high hat cymbals and another two smaller drums from a local second hand shop and we now have a good little kit that dreamingwombat is learning to play on. ![]() |

...It would be a coincidence, of course, that many drums worldwide are made from goatskin!
