I love Indian classical music -- especially the stuff that is "off the beaten path" like the shenai/violin duets of Bismillah Khan and Professor C.V. Jog. I also enjoy the drupad singing of the Dagar Brothers, and Subalakshmi singing the Mira badjens.
I listen to western opera while I work. And I love The Doors!

Abdul Karim Khan sounds familiar, but half of my favorite musicians are khans! <g>

Ya qawwalis are great, I specially like traditional 'Amir Khusro' Qawwalis by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and by Abida Parbin. Wadali Brothers are nice too. have never heared of kashti.
Dagar brothers are great exponents of Dhrupad music. I dont know why Dhrupad is no more pouplar. I just love it. I like Subalakshmi's Karnatic music more then her Meera Bhajans, and Doors is generally I listen to while partying with friends. Kumar Gandharva is brilliant and very popular, but I like his unpopular son more(he is generally drunk and rude) . Ustad Abdul Karim Khan was a Maestro from Kirana Gharana. He blended some features of Carnatic music with Hindustani style. I have heared two superb performances of Raga Lalit and Raga Basant by the maestro. His died in 1930s and his albums are generally not available. I wish I could listen more from him. My other favorites are Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali KhanSahib, Ustad Amir Khan, Ustad Fayyaz Khan, Mallika Arjun Mansoor, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Ustad Vilayat Khan and many more |

Music in my life is an every changing constant. This week I am feeling kind of down (life is going nowhere....blah...blah...blah) so I have gone retro way back to the late 80's and early 90's. The cd's in my car right now are some old Cure cd's, some Dramarama (if anyone knows them), Mazzy Star, This Mortal Coil, Sisters of Mercy, and a few other down and dreary choices. Perfect blend if you ask me.
Of course next week I may feel be in a bad mood and be playing some Ministry, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, etc..etc.... And the next I may feel calm and be playing some Future Sounds of London, Sad World, or some other ambient stuff. But never.....and I mean never will you find me playing Country or Western music...except for some Johnny Cash every now and then. Bollwyood music sometimes but mostly if no one else is around since most people here are unfamiliar with it and I always get "what the hell is that". (oh yeah doesn't Alka Yagnik also live in New Jersey part year) Mike |
