Yes..get what you mean..Indian films were popular in a lot of erstwhile USSR states & in the balkans even in the past..

Now Sharukh is popular, but Raj Kapoor is the first Bollywood star who is famous right from Turkey to China..!! People especially remember his song "awaara hoonnnnnn........" even though it is so many decades old...My tajik friends were amused & delighted when I told them that Kareena Kapoor (starred in Jab we met/ Tashan..)is Raj Kapoor's grand daughter.

In my experience, some how awara hoon seems to be very popular with cabbies..They instantly begin to hum it, if you tell them you are Indian..

xiaojie,

You are right...Indian movies have been famous since soviet times. But I should tell you that now our TV channels show Indian movies very often, especially one can find them on weekends, and by the way they show new movies rather than Disco dancer, Bobi...

Well, Jab we met I watched in India, and I loved both the actor and actress, then I received the DVD from my Indian friend and watched once again back home, it is really a nice movie...

What about Chak de India??? I love it too!!!!!

Chak India is good..makes us proud to be an Indian..(though it also reminds me of the hollywood movie Coach Carter.)

a Few of my favorites are :-

Othello inspired 'Maqbool'
'Parinda ' meaning bird..movie delves into mumbai gangs
'Nayakan' 'Mahanadhi' - tamil movies staring Kamal Hassan...inarguably one of the finest actors India has produced.
'Masoom'
'Lagaan',
among others..!

(annita, I suggest you to watch Lagaan..a bit long but in similar genre as Chak de)

As I know - "Othello" adaptation is named "Omkara", and "Maqbool" is inspired by "Macbet". I love both movies

I'm not an expert on Bollywood films but there seems to be pattern that Bollywood runs about 15 years behind Hollwood.

The golden age of Bollwood, when the most intelligent filmmaking was taking place, was the early 50s to late 60s - mirroring Hollwood's Golden Age in the 40s and 50s. I would suggest watching Pyassa from 1957 (or a Shammi Kapoor comedy for something with more mainstream appeal).

With a few exceptions the 80 and 90s was a time of juvenile comedies and action movies - mirroring the 70s and 80s in Hollwood.

Apparently over the last few years there has been a resurgence in Bollywood quality. If this is true it would mirror Hollwood's resurgence from the early 90s.

From modern Indian films- I won't lie- I haven't seen much of them- but recently, that is a year ago I watched 2 films - I really liked them very much.
I don't remember the name of first film, maybe you can help me: the theme was like following: a young rich girl who has a beautiful house and lives on her own meets a boy named Karan and falls in love with him. They live together. Later one day Karan leaves for some place for a short time and asks the girl to let in his friend who must come very soon. The girl does so. Karan's friend comes to the girl's house and as agreed, the girl lets him in. His friend has a big suitcase in his hand. After waiting for Karan for half an hour, he leaves, but forgets his suitcase. In the evening on TV news girl sees Karan's friend was killed and learns that Karan's friend was a member of narcotic selling criminal group (or sth like that), one of the most wanted criminals by State. She cannot believe it. Police begins search everywhere in the town - where the killed man was last, whom he met. Police arrests the girl, who swears he has no connection with this murder at all, but the killed man's suitcase shows the opposite. So the girl is put into prison, who sees and experiences another side of life: bitter and cruel. One of the older ugly woman prisoners wants to make use of the girl. She attempts several times to break the pride of the girl, finally girl cannot bear anymore and fights: she beats the ugly woman and gains respect among other prisoners. Meanwhile, Karan comes and visits the girls, persuading her to tell that she knew the murdered boy and hires a lawyer for her, but strongly recommends not to mention his name. The girl, who first denied everything, tells lie becuause she loved Karan and believed he would save him. The girl's father or uncle dies from heart disease. Finally, the girl understands she was deceived and Karan will never come back. He just used her for his pleasure. One of the woman prisoners helps the girl to escape from prison with the help of her contacts outside. So the girl escapes and begins to search Karan. She finds her in another town with another girl, but does not show up. Karan is searched by another person- whom he deceived also- but this man is the head another group. He wants Karan to be brought alive. I'll cut short: Girl meets Karan, acts like she still believes in him, still loves him. Towards the end Karan knows it was all lie: the girl came back just to take revenge of him for bygones. The girl leaves Karan chained in the mountains all alone together with rats/mice. (She remembers when they lived together Karan laughed at her on hearing the girl was so afraid of rats.) By this time the girl is exonerated by police.
Another favourite film of mine is "Hum Tum" or "Me and You" - very beautiful film. In this film Karan plays the main role. (I don’t know the name of this actor). A boy whose profession is director of photography makes comics. I’m sure many of you already know which movie I’m talkin’ ‘bout.

Ek Haseena Thi.

my fav. must watch

xiaojie, I should ask for that movie to be sent from India and i hope there will be English subtitles, else I will watch in India if I have the chance to visit again...

I don't know if I translate correctly the name of a movie called "The thirst of the revenge" but that's one of my favorite movies, and it's an old one. The actress name in the movie is "Artsi". When I asked about this movie in India, people remembered it after I told them the whole scene

There's no actress called "artsi"

Is it by any chance a movie called "khoon Bhari maang" staring Rekha..?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khoon_Bhari_Maang

Just realised that Rekha's character's name in the movie is 'arti verma'

One of the hurdles that Indian cinema needs to get over is the penchant for the 'remake'. Many foreign movies and stories are adapted for the Indian market. Some of them work but many don't. I would think that India would have sufficient talent to produce original stories. The culture is so rich and varied there must be endless possibilities to work with. But, no. They will go after a successful movie in the west and reinvent it, so to speak. This, for me, is the Achilles heel of Indian cinema. Not enough good writers getting their original work made.

2 big movies that were remakes of western tales were Omkara and Maqbool, both done by the same director. For me, Omkara was the superior movie but not a great movie. Maqbool, otoh, had fantastic actors, but, I felt the script and the disjointed way in which the story is told fails. It was a combo of Macbeth and The Godfather with the role of the Godfather played like a caricature. No real feeling in the movie except for Irfan Khan, Maqbool, who is always great to watch.
