Now Sharukh is popular, but Raj Kapoor is the first Bollywood star who is famous right from Turkey to China..!! People especially remember his song "awaara hoonnnnnn........" even though it is so many decades old...My tajik friends were amused & delighted when I told them that Kareena Kapoor (starred in Jab we met/ Tashan..)is Raj Kapoor's grand daughter. In my experience, some how awara hoon seems to be very popular with cabbies..They instantly begin to hum it, if you tell them you are Indian.. |

xiaojie,
You are right...Indian movies have been famous since soviet times. But I should tell you that now our TV channels show Indian movies very often, especially one can find them on weekends, and by the way they show new movies rather than Disco dancer, Bobi... Well, Jab we met I watched in India, and I loved both the actor and actress, then I received the DVD from my Indian friend and watched once again back home, it is really a nice movie... What about Chak de India??? I love it too!!!!! |

Chak India is good..makes us proud to be an Indian..(though it also reminds me of the hollywood movie Coach Carter.)
a Few of my favorites are :- Othello inspired 'Maqbool' 'Parinda ' meaning bird..movie delves into mumbai gangs 'Nayakan' 'Mahanadhi' - tamil movies staring Kamal Hassan...inarguably one of the finest actors India has produced. 'Masoom' 'Lagaan', among others..! (annita, I suggest you to watch Lagaan..a bit long but in similar genre as Chak de) |

As I know - "Othello" adaptation is named "Omkara", and "Maqbool" is inspired by "Macbet". I love both movies ![]()

I'm not an expert on Bollywood films but there seems to be pattern that Bollywood runs about 15 years behind Hollwood.
The golden age of Bollwood, when the most intelligent filmmaking was taking place, was the early 50s to late 60s - mirroring Hollwood's Golden Age in the 40s and 50s. I would suggest watching Pyassa from 1957 (or a Shammi Kapoor comedy for something with more mainstream appeal). With a few exceptions the 80 and 90s was a time of juvenile comedies and action movies - mirroring the 70s and 80s in Hollwood. Apparently over the last few years there has been a resurgence in Bollywood quality. If this is true it would mirror Hollwood's resurgence from the early 90s. |

xiaojie, I should ask for that movie to be sent from India and i hope there will be English subtitles, else I will watch in India if I have the chance to visit again...
I don't know if I translate correctly the name of a movie called "The thirst of the revenge" but that's one of my favorite movies, and it's an old one. The actress name in the movie is "Artsi". When I asked about this movie in India, people remembered it after I told them the whole scene ![]() |

2 big movies that were remakes of western tales were Omkara and Maqbool, both done by the same director. For me, Omkara was the superior movie but not a great movie. Maqbool, otoh, had fantastic actors, but, I felt the script and the disjointed way in which the story is told fails. It was a combo of Macbeth and The Godfather with the role of the Godfather played like a caricature. No real feeling in the movie except for Irfan Khan, Maqbool, who is always great to watch. |
