What is your favorite Indian movie?
The Hrishikesh Mukherjee trinity:
Guddi,Anand,Golmaal..
Each one touching upon a different aspect of life, but with the same Hrishida philosophy of keeping it all simple and not contrived or boisterous..
If total-fun movies is what you want, then there are the Shammi Kapoor starrers..full paisa vasool.Shammi's site .Shammi took to internet a long time back and is very savvy as it.
I don't know if too many know about this, but IMHO,the Tamil movie Aasai is special..

I remember it was absolutely great to find the familiar places of Udaipur during watching Guide (1965) - they looks really different - and at the same time similar too after 40 years
And the movie is really one of the best of Hindi cinema. By the way - the picturization of the song Aaj Phir Jeene ke tamanna hai - is it Ranakpur? extremly beautiful!!!
Past the point of no return...
Like Wichy I'm a fan of Guru Dutt.
Kaagaz Ke Phool is a favourite. It was beautifully made .Dutt was superb both as actor and director.
Having said that, I have fond memories of the fantastic Rekha as Police Inspector Jhansi Rani (!?) in Insaaf ki Awaaz.
She beats up her husband in that one but looks so good in her uniform you can easily forgive her.

I liked the movie MASOOM, Urmila is a little kid in it and Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah play her parents role. One movie that really touched my heart!!
And I can sit through any of Smita Patil's movies, one can't say she was acting for a second, she was so natural, irrespective of the intensity of the character at hand.

Smile -- it makes people wonder what you're up to
A note re: the title Guru: there are two movies, an American movie called The Guru, with Jimmy Mistry in it, and a HIndi language big-budget movie called Guru (no "the").
The Guru is a comedy about an Indian guy who comes to New York and ends up being regarded as "the Guru of sex" by rich New York people. I really like it, it's nice and funny.
Guru is from 2006 and stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in a movie based on the biography of Dirubhai Ambani, a leading industrialist of India and a person who broke through the impediments to business development presented by rules called The License Raj.
Guru is directed by Mani Ratnam (he made Dil Se) and has music by A.R. Rahman. It covers a period of at least thirty years. It's a strong movie with wonderful music and cinematography - a rare Bollywood movie that shows earlier periods of the twentieth century in India in well-researched detail. Vidya Balan is also in it, and Mithun Chakraborty and Madhavan, the handsome Tamil star.

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare dream of meeting your heart's longing.

Has anyone seen "Parzania"? I saw the movie yesterday ...worth watching. A movie with a sad ending (not that you need to watch a sad movie but..) it is based on a true story. The story is based in Gujarat. Nasruddin Shah has the lead role alongwith an American actor.
anyone watch the new gandhi movie about his neglected son? any reviews? (and pls don't give out the ending!!!
