western twentieth century literature...about india
it's approaching that time of year when many westerners, planning on visiting india during the next few months, are considering books to either take on their trip or, indeed, read now to get in the mood.
i've just finished re-reading " a passage to india" for about the tenth time - i think it is perhaps the most sympathetic evocation of india during the colonial experience written by an englishman. whilst reading it i was reminded of a book i read a few years ago by emma smith - "the far cry": http://www.persephonebooks.co.uk/pag...he_far_cry.htm i wanted to draw attention to this minor masterpiece and encourage any of you looking for something more than just "a good read" to take a look. persephone are a publisher that should be encouraged. any observations on either of these books from other contributors? |
