Watching Movies in their original location

Last winter we stayed in Udaipur and watched the 007 Movie Octopussy. It's great being able to turn around and see the location live that's also on film.

I remember having stayed in a hostel in Salzburg where they showed "The sound of Music" every night.

I feel that it has added value and it gives a special feeling to watch a movie in the place where it was filmed.

Anybody have any memories of movies in their original locations?

Hans

I watch Telugu (and some Tamil) movies for the same reason...they connect me back to Vizag where most of these movies are shot.

not indian - but I've watched the Killing Fields in Cambodia.....and at the moment when the lead character is escaping the Khmer Rouge and slips into a canal full of bodies - a lightning bolt hit the hotel and plunged the hotel in darkness (I swear if I had been a cat I would have been climbing the ceiling).

Often on TV I catch Hindi movies with scenes of my area here - last year we sat on our front verandah watching a film crew and actors shooting for nearly a week up on the chattrees right in front of us. The title of the movie was a well kept secret but I daresay one of these days I will catch glimpses of it! The desert and stone carved buildings are frequently backgrounds to films here - many shooting parties come throughout the year from Mumbai.

bb - I can just imagine that moment! I saw The Killing Fields not so long ago on Star Movies and OMG that particular scene really clutched the emotions.

I'm a huge fan of New York movies, but I never really thought about this. Very cool!

There are even a few movies made right in my neighborhood, or very close by. Last time I watched Do The Right Thing, I kept trying to do freeze frames to see which street corner it takes place on -- it's about half a mile from my place! Good thing the neighborhood has changed a lot since then...

Salaam Namaste and Chak De India both filmed in Melbourne. I saw each of them in cinemas in Melbourne. The cheers from the mainly Indian audiences when Melbourne appeared on screen were quite amusing!

I was in Jaipur visiting the city palace while Aishawara & co. were filming the most recent version of Umrao Jaan. I asked Shabana Azmi if I could take her picture, and she replied, "It is STRICTLY forbidden, but I am willing to say hello to you!" Although I've heard this version of Umrao Jaan is not very good, I am looking forward to watching it to remember the fun we had star-gazing and trying to convince the guards to let us in for a peek.

'The Sea Wolves' came on a local cable channel a few years back and the start of it looked good what with Roger Moore, WW2, spies & all - so I decided to watch it. What I wasn't aware of was that it was partially filmed in Goa and when some of the interior scenes in the old secretariat building (Adilshah palace) appeared - a really strong deja vu feeling overcame me, initially, before clueing-in that I had spent many hours waiting, meeting & dining in those very on-location movie set/rooms.

bb - I watch Lord of the Rings ONLY because of the scenery. I'm not one for fantasy stuff but this is a great way to spot 'where it is now?'!! A real nostalgia trip for me!!!

On one of the Lord of the Rings DVD's there's a really interesting documentary about how the art department of the films converted real life locations into the landscape of Middle Earth. A must-see for anyone interested in the New Zealand aspects of the films.

Children of a Lesser God was filmed in my hometown and my daily jogging route (for those who saw the now vintage movie) often encircles the school complex used in the shooting of the film.

Most of the scenes from "Drugstore Cowboy" where filmed in the neighborhood where I'm currently living.

the company I worked for at the time did a lot of work with the production studio (mostly IT, digital networks, stuff like that). Unfortunately seeing what happened behind the scenes sort of takes the gloss off the movie (not too mention after 4 years of working on it - it was kinda of good to see the back end of it as well)
