Watch Swades

http://Swades.com

It's India you don't see reflected in commercial Hindi cinema. And it's a film that moves you.

I second the recommendation!

For those who have seen the movie and live in India or know a lot about life there: does this movie give a fairly accurate portrait of Indian village life?

Yes...I just saw the movie and its quite an eye opener. India is sharply divided between the haves and have nots. This movie spins around a NASA based Indian scientist who returns to India to rediscovers his roots.

The movie throws open many hard hitting issues like ..."How do we consider ourselves a great nation when thousands are denied the right for education, employment etc owing to caste politics?" . Its a movie about self-discovery...about bringing a peoples' movement at the grassroots level.

Its a movie that makes u sit back and think.

Watched Swadesh and was blown away. Really good film. Must watch for all India lovers. (of course, most of you on IM would need subtitles, unfortunately.)

Well, i saw Swades a couple of weeks back. I didnt expect much from the movie, given the hype that it was coming with. But i was so wrong.
And the sad fact is that whats depicted in that movie is something thats not limited to just the villages. Oh of course the urban areas have electricity and internet and all that jazz, but the basic mentality of the people in the urban areas is not very different from that of the villagers in the movie. We all still need to break the shackles of caste, creed, religion etc etc. Thats what Swades made me realise....

someone please tell me where that scene was shot. The one in which Sharukh goes to recover the rent from this old man in a far away village. After the train shot, he is going in the boat and there is this lake / river surrounded by rock face ranges. That bit is so beautiful. But I couldn't make out where in India it is shot. Anyone? Maybe I should post this question in "where was this picture taken?"

well, despite it's message, SRK was a bit flat, IMHO.

asking for trouble, aren't you? :-) watch this thread devolve into a train wreck by your reckless, thoughtless, insensitive attack on Amitabh...err...oops...SRK.

Now, I'll sit back & kick off my shoes and watch the fun.

Saw Swades w/ my wife and mother-in-law
Movie was very good, AR Rahman's music is brilliant as usual. I enjoyed it's slow pace. No one can whip up tears as fast or as often as SRK.

So many people say it's his best performance yet! Ah well, I'm sure there will be more SRK "lover-boy" roles for you to enjoy bijapuri!
