BTW Thanks Avid for that. You are already a highest scorer in 'Indian Culture' so no more space you have left for more marks on this correct(should be) answer!

Hey on Indian Culture......if you do not know yet the episodes of Chanakya are coming up on Google Video. Do check it out! I used to love watching those episodes. Am so glad such epic TV stuff is coming up for viewing..... so easily accessible. Now am just waiting for someone to upload Bharat Yek Khoj(The Discovery of India) episodes. The 'Pandit Nehru' in that is simply amazing!

Ok getting a little more demanding.... I have been wanting to memorize(n understand) the title "shlok" of Chanaykya. View it here. Tried to look for its verses but no help so far. Anyone knows its title/verses and is willing to share here? Pleeeeeeeeeease!

And here is the title song of Discovery of India. Simply Amazing!! Mind blowing!

Shrishti se pehele Sat nahi tha,
Asath bhi nahi, Antariksh bhi nahi,
Aaakash bhi nahi tha, Chippa tha kya , kaha, kisne dhaka tha.........

Its Shabari who tasted the berries ( ber) before offering it to Ram. And the bird was Jatayu, the vulture.

What about Tinkle

and Tinkle comics which took off where ACK left.. Supaandi is simple and hilarious.
Yes, I remember Target and Detective Moochwala- they had these little baby cartoons sprawled all over the comics- sometimes on header of page, sometimes at end of an article, sometimes near the page numbers..

Wow.. a thread about comics
I remember starting my reading life with "champak", its specialty was that all the characters in the stories were animals.. then i graduated to "nandan", and especially their festival editions on angels and vedas.. It used to have one translated story from around the world in each edition. I got introduced to the world of chekhov, H.G. Wells, narnia.. and so many more through it. Chandamama and Parag also used to be quite popular.

Then came the thriller comics age.. like "lambu-motu" (the hardy boys of indian comic scene) and fauladi singh (a superhero created by a scientist called Dr. John). Chacha Chaudhary and his special editions against the usual nemesis "Raka" used to be very popular.

Have to make a special mention of "Indrajaal comics". They used to print all the western characters and publish their very indian stories. "Mandrake", "Phantom", "Rip Kirby" were just a few of the popular heroes.

Till that time Diamond comics were very popular with kids. Suddenly out of nowhere Raj Comics entered the scene and blew the now-getting-stale characters of diamond comics away. They introduced new characters like Nagraj (A superhero full of snakes in his body), super commando dhruv (A superhero teenager who could talk to the animals), Baankeylal (A mythical character who could do no wrong as in.. whenever he tries to do any mischief and do wrong to anyone, it will result in a good thing).. so on and so forth. It became a mania at that time. The stories were very novel and the aritsts were brilliant.

Sadly, with the advent of cable TV, all of this got lost and now the kids are content with cartoon network and MTV !!

Phantom

The Phantom series used to also come in the Illustarted weekly..
we would follow the romance with Diana Palmer till the birth of their twins..and those characters- Rex, Guran, and the one liners: he's a wolf, not a dog...and for those who came in late...

and does anyone remember who has that Shetty-like friend of Mandrake? Something from L?

think about it..
Spiderman by Karan Johar - Khabie Makadee Khabi Insaan
Spiderman by Ekta Kapoor - Kkhaannii ek makadee ka
Spiderman by Mahesh Bhatt - Yeh hain makadee meri jaan
Spiderman by Yash chopra - Aadmi aur makadee

And one song for sure in this movie would be...
aasmaan se aaya farishta....

The first part is from the bRhadaaraNyaka upaniShad

The original from the vedas....

(before Creation)
Neither was then non-existence nor existence.
Neither movement here nor the heavens beyond.
What cloaked what? Where? Under whose sovereignty?
What were waters deep dark and unfathomable?

See this link of the book by Raimundo Panikkar [one of the really good translators of the veda]

Hope you can memorize the shloka now
I'll hear you recite it on our next trek
