Want to know Indian Culture? Read Comics :-)

ummm Indian Comics to be precise

Excerpt:

Quote:
Katherine McLaine recently earned a doctorate from the University of Texas for her thesis entitled ‘Whose Immortal Picture Stories?: Amar Chitra Katha and the Construction of Indian Identities’. Ironically, that made her the first person anywhere in the world to get a doctorate on Indian comics
...........
Apart from being the subject of serious study, mythological comics can also be used to learn languages.
Here, From Time of India is the whole story. I can imagine how amusing it wud be to read those through those picture stories...

For me, though an Indian, its a whole lot challenging to correctly relate characters to their right fathers, mothers, wives, dynasties, kingdom and all. I often get mixed up with such a multitude of characters and their stories.

ok...just a trivia for you guys on Indian Mythology....
I remember the incident but not the name.....

Anyone remembers the name of that lady who gave 'tasted' (bitten) fruits to Shri Ram in the jungle? This happened while the trio(Sita, Laxman and himself) were in the woods for 14 years(oh I remember the number of years ). The trio were in their orange clothes so it must have been during their 'vanvaas'

One more ....

Whats the name of that bird who kind of tried to save Sita from being abducted by His Highness Ravana?

Infact a great deal of my knowledge of history of India, especially of famous kings, queens and heros and also folk tales, comes from Amar Chitra Katha. We have more than 100 of them stored at home, which were bought when I was a kid!

Well, vaguely On-Topic (India... Comics...)

This article in yesterdays New Indian Express

The brave new world of webcomics

CHENNAI: All across India, comics play a big part in traditional religion, literature and parables, but outside of those they haven’t made much headway into popular culture.

However, there is one area where there is almost unlimited room for artists and writers to expand into: the new field of webcomics’.
And here is Arbit Choudury

I think I'll be adding it to my daily internet reading

One of my most treasured possessions is my AMC version of the Mahabharat (with special Bhagavad Gita issue) in 17 volumes. Indispensible for keeping your Dristhyadumnas and Dhritharashtras apart!

Jataka Tales and Stories from the Panchatantra are also Good. There used to be a monthly Book called Chandamama. That was also nice.

Amyl, I maybe wrong,The bird's name was Jatayu. The one that tried to save Sita.

My Moms used to read stories from Chandamama when I was a kid demanding a new story every night . Now she does the same for my niece. I also enjoyed reading stories specially of Vikram-Vetal (spl?) and also many stories about traders, sadhus, landlords and all. Hey there was one TV thing about Vikram Vetal... I still remember that scary makeup of Vetal...white ong hair, no teeth I think, red lips....
It was quite intriguing how he always managed to defeat Viram at the end of a 'riddle story' and get back on the tree he was picked up from.

I don't remember the Name of the lady. I used to confuse Jataka with Jatayu and hence remember it.

Vikram-betal tales were great and I do remember that Tv-sitcom. It was not that bad and it was even copied in regional languages. There is nothing to beat the start of the tale. 'Dark was the night...' . Somewhat in that manner.

Btw, I liked Betal's offer, If you tell the correct answer, I will fly away, If you know it and don't tell the answer, I will break your skull. Quite a reasonable guy .

First one: Sabari

Second one: Jatayu, a vulture. As a bonus, Jatayu's brother Sampaati also appears in the Ramayana.

Diamond comics by Indian cartoonist Pran having characters like Chacha Chaoudhary, Billu, Pinki, Chacha Bhatija etc. were quite popular with kids during pre-satellite channel era.
Nandan and Champak were other staple read for kid's that time.

I remember reading a magazine named Target. It used to have Ajit Ninan's cartoons; one of them a series named Detective Moochwala

South Indians would not forget Chandamama that I believe is still published today.

Man! Chacha Chaudhary had gripped all my pals back in school. These guys used to bring loads of this character and sit under the bench along the walls and simply devour while lectures (or 'periods' as we used to say then ) went by. I never read more than one/two tho. I remember there was also one TV thing about Chacha Chaudhary (anim). I do remember Sabu
