TV series 'The Jewel In The Crown' starts tomorrow.

The following is from the ITV website..

Jewel In The Crown (part 1 of 14)
PROGRAMME OF THE MONTH
STARTING SUNDAY 4 SEPTEMBER
ITV3, 22:25-00:40

This stunning and multi award-winning series tells the fascinating story of the people of India. Set in northern India at the time of the Second World War and the Independence riots, this is the story of the men and women whose lives were to suffer violent change. Starring Art Malik and Tim Pigott-Smith.
I never saw the series the first time round (1984) and I'm wondering just how good it is, is it mostly set (and filmed) in India?

Is it really 28 hours long?

1984? I thought it was more like 1970!

Certainly seems a long, long time ago!

Wrong date Steven. It starts tomorrow night (Sunday) on ITV3 at 10.25.

In my opinion, well worth watching. It's also available on DVD for about £30 and probably available for rent. We bought a copy on video some years ago but the quality was crap compared to the TV re-run. I think this is the third or fourth re-run.

Total length of the DVD seems to be 13 hours so perhaps they are showing two parts to begin with.

I hope they show it again here soon. I also watched it the first time around and found myself planning my life around the TV schedule!

Its great (so are the books) and absorbing on a soap level. My mother in law didn't feel it was India but perspectives vary. Its been out on DVD for ages and I saw a special on that recently..

I missed the original showing of "Jewel in the Crown" on TV, but was able to borrow the videos from the local library. It's a curiously clean, cow-less and un-populated India that you'll see (because it depicts life in the cantonment side) ... but if you like romantic stories, it's quite good and well done.

It was definitely filmed in India. I got one of those "The Making of ... " books on eBay and it describes the production in detail and the various locations. I thought the series was excellent, and the books are even better.

13 hrs. There's a followup segment called "staying on" with trevor howard as a crusty OIH in the 1970's at rose cottage, and a cast party segment, but I dunno if either of those made onto the DVD. Filmed in Udaipur, shimla and around Bangalore, released in 1984. Excelent acting, plot, etc. Its all about the RaJ and the Brits that staffed it. Don't expect it to ba anything more than what it is.
