oh boy am i cream crackered [still] ....

Greetings Space Munchkins .....

WOMAD 2006 was kool, very hot with a nice shower precipitation the Saturday evening to which it seemed half the festival goers crammed into the wonderful Siam tent.

Down point the local chavs/nebbishes/wuckfits spoilt a Friday evening in the Rivermead Hall - talking to other festival goers that had been camping stealing was quite high this year high (organised gangs] so it seems.

Highlights in this order were .....
Mastana Qawwali du Rajasthan - Sunday, Village Stage
Djelimady Tounkara - Sunday, again Village Stage
Dimi Mint Abba - Friday - Open Air Stage
Pascals - Sunday - Open Air Stage
A rocking Toumani Diabate - Saturday - Siam Tent [early]
Sunshiners - Saturday - Open Air Stage
Orange Blossom - Saturday - Village Stage
Salif Keita - Friday - Open Air Stage [Mandjou was outstanding from a slightly looking bored / tired Salif]
Kanda Bongo Man - Saturday - Open Air Stage replaced Thomas Mapfumo as the Brits wouldn’t grant him his visa… oh yes I did do the Kwassa Kwassa
Trilok Gurtu & the Misra Brothers - Saturday - Siam Tent
Femi Kuti & the Positive Force - Saturday - Open Air Stage
Cherifa - Sunday - Siam Tent.
Toumani Diabate - Saturday - BBC Radio 3 Stage [late]
Akli D - Saturday - Village Stage
Titi Robin - Saturday - Siam Tent
Gotan Project - Friday - Siam Tent [ nice dubby set]

Odds n sods

Mahotella Queens - Friday - Siam Tent arrived late as it clashed with Amaan Ali Khan & Ayaan Ali Khanh - Village Stage, preferred Amaan Ali Khan though what we heard & saw of.

Varttina - Friday - Siam Tent
Salsa Celtica - Friday - Siam Tent
Los de Abajo - Friday - Open Air Stage
Dalby Balde - Saturday - BBC Radio 3 Stage
Ska Cubano - Saturday - Open Air Stage
Ivo Papasov & His Wedding Band - Sunday - Open Air Stage
Konono No. 1 - Sunday - Open Air Stage
Mitsoura - Sunday - Village Stage

We strolled over to the Siam Tent [late Friday evening to watch & listen To Anoushka Shankir, as we had left 10 minutes before Salif Keita’s set was finishing alas we arrived a wee bit to late we could only get a place on the very outside of the Siam Tent despite people trying to tell others to stop yakking & laughing it was no good we left way before the end of her set after only managing to hear 2 numbers, that’s the nature of these festivals I guess., thing is, missing & clashing time tables occur.

Have to give that man Johhny Khalsa a big thanks great MC [as always] they [Dhol Foundation] did a promptu stand in set as the Warsaw Village Band were stuck in Spain due to a Airport Strike.

All in all we 3 enjoyed ourselves very tiring walking from stage to stage with the assault of wonderful grub to be noshed, alongside the Cider Tent !!! That does not help after drinking wine before hand, would recommend this festival to anyone, very friendly and family orientated good facilities [won’t go on about the bogs as you are most travellers]

Next year will be the 25th anniversaries of WOMAD so it should be a cracker ….

Purchases at WOMAD, be as thus …

Sunshiners - Sunshiners - CD
Various Artist - Echoes Du Paradis - Sufi Soul - 2 CD
Amadou Balake - Taximen + CD
Mila na Utamaduni - Spices Of Zanzibar - CD
Dub Ainu - Oki - CD
Orange Blossom - Everythingmustchange - CD
Gotan Project - A Gotan Project DJ Set selected and mixed by Philippe Cohen Soalal - CD

Thanks to our dear friend Justin, Who brought us and came from ooop North to stay with us ..

Mustana - chants Qawwali du Rajasthan - CD
Various Artists - “ A Night In Marrakech - Morocco’s Master musicians meets The Latest Maghreb Beats - 2 CD [CD 2 on rinsing now]
Inernational Music Series - Music Of India V.4 - CD

Yes very tiring but sooo rewarding, my view its almost like travelling with out a passport.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Respect

Peace ~ mm56

On Leaping from Airplanes by Oceanographer

Great band (Oceanographer) originally from Dallas, Texas but moved to Brooklyn, New York. Anyone who is a music nut should check them out. Best listening to at midnight while watching the city lights. www.oceanographermusic.com

I love the Goo Goo Dolls. Best album is A Boy Named Goo and the best song on the album, and best GGD song is "Name".

thanks Mike for sharing your WOMAD days. i am going to look up some of the artists.. right now though its.

The Music of Deserts
Composer :- Zakir Hussein
Other Artists: Fazal Qureshi, Taufiq Qureshi, Vinayak Vohra, Sultan Khan, Gajanan More, Sadik Qureshi, Raja..and others...

i like this album over the other compilations in the soundscape series..and especially the track here on the great indian desert (with subtracks as it says on the notes.. caravans, panihari-the water carriers, ghangaur and mand).. . it feels so real..there are so many instruments used in this album..the sarangi and the shenai stand out for me..especially with a very sombre mood......shenai, sarangi, tabla, pakhawaj, duff, dholak, matka, chenda, tasha, manjira, khadtaal, nagara, e-drums, percussion, keyboards..have not heard of khadtaal and nagara?

from the liner notes in zakir's own words..

<deserts impress me. there is absolute silence, but in its midst, you hear so many things - the sweep of the wind, the cries of the birds and the rustle of the animals moving across the sandy surface. I respond to the eartly colors and warm tones, the extreme environments of heat and cold, the engulfing awesomeness of the harsh contours. desert people fascinate me with their pristineness and organic approach to life. the tradtional cultures of the desert in our part of the world (in india, middleeast and africa) have much in common in terms of rhythms and instruments.......you will hear as i did, melodic strains that seem to echo through all these areas - the result perhaps of nomadic flows - and in the insistent urgent percussion beats, you too will glimpse the courage and valor of desert peoples..
a different aura surrounds the mysterious ice desert of ladakh with its tibetan and central asian connections. this composition is my musical interpretation of its landscape, majestic yet bleak and the deep spirituality of its people and monasteries>

khadtaal are like rajasthani castanets - two thin, rectangular pieces of wood with rounded edges held two in each hand and used to create some fantastic rat-a-tat rhythms. Nagara are like kettle drums, one small and one large. BIg ones used to be played to announce the arrival of important people at palaces. THere's a fantastic guy from Pushkar I've seen who plays some very intricate rhythms on them. I'm sure you can google for pictures of them.

My tune of the day is one I heard o nthe radio yesterday

Tera Khilauna Tuta - Mohd Rafi - rather funky if you ask me!

thanks beebah but i havent been able to locate pics of khadtaal. i would love to see them if anyone has a photo of it..and i came across conflicting pictures of nagara (and one from azerbaijan)..and them with chenda and tasha as well.....so i am a bit still..maybe its regional variations...

the first one it says is a gosha nagara from azerbaijan..the next two are classified as nagara as well from some images..and the first to last one from the right said was a tasha, the last one being a chenda.....????

Here's a photo of someone playing Nagara/naqqara and on this page there's sound clip - go to "kerwah" by Nathu Lal Solinkey

Then you can go here where you'll see a great picture of a guy playing naqqara in Jodhpur fort and if you go here you'll see photos and hae a sound example of Kartal.

enjoy

thanks man. english spellings for ethnic words i tell ya..they kill me. khadtaal i guess is also kartal. i wish they would standardize these to make the research easier. same issues with rag/ragas ..spellings are all over the place.

also in one your links (the last one... of richard's trip), it lists an instrument called kamaica played by the community of manganiyars of jodhpur . this string instrument from the photo looks like a copy of the iranian instrument kamancheh. i wonder if the author got the spelling wrong or is it a different one.....

its a coincidence because at the moment i am listening to the following CD (a reference from a earlier post in this thread) that is a jugalbandi of the iranian kamancheh and indian sitar.

As Night Falls On The Silk Road
Kayhan Kalhor [Kamancheh] & Shujat Hussein Khan [Sitar] & Swapan Chaudhari [Tabla]

the liner notes in this CD talks about links between iranian classical music and north indian hindustani classical music. it is fascinating, the similarities and the history
