rain clouds gathering all day after a week or so of full blast sun. what a beautiful sight!..cant help but bring out the malhars CDs...pandit jasraj, kishori amonkar, veena sahasrabudde, bhimsen joshi, parveen sultana, and all kinds of malhar renditions,...gaud malhar, miyan malhar, megh malhar

malhars are a category of hindustani genre 'raags' that are played during the monsoon season. a legend says that miyan tansen was able to bring out the rain by playing this raag and hence one of them is called miya ke malhar in honor of him.

rains invoke different emotions. in the western world, for many its sad and depressive moods but in india..the arrival of monsoon, there is joy, smells of fresh earth, the dark clouds and the verdant landscape!!..(this doesnt apply any more in the big cities

)...

so pick up a malhar by any hindustani artist, vocalist or instrumentalist..and get lost in the alaap, in the drama of a rainy landscape..!..
