The Ramayana for Dummies (like me)
In the hopes that this will help others who are new to Indian literature, I thought I'd share this site I found The entire Illustrated Valmiki's Ramayana (comic book format) is available here. I had tried reading R.K. Narayan's version and my head was spinning, having had no previous exposure to the story. The comic book format helped me keep all of the characters straight. I recommend it to any newbies who are trying to become familiar with Indian culture.

Not as elaborate as the illustrated version above, but we've posted an article on the Ramayana on our site, with some background on the story and its history, a character list , and a 2 page "Ramayana in brief" summary of the story based on RK Narayan's book "The Ramayana - A great Indian epic retold by a great Indian writer".
