It kind of seems like a cross between The Joy Luck Club and The Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood, with a little Jhumpa Lahiri sprinkled on top.
Which might be really good, now that I think of it... |

that is actually what the review in the blog said. the blogger said she is wary of books that claim to be "just like...." whatever because they are usually not, but she said she was pleasantly surprised.
plus the book has recipes! |

Read it, loved it, am a member of her personal forum after contacting her! She is a lovely lady and I LOVED the book. It was my passion for the book and 'seeing my friends' in it (Oh that is just like Neeta! etc.)that made me email (which I had never done before).
I highly recommend it!!! Kim

I didn't read the blog, I swear!!
Sometimes it's my instinct to be turned off by a book that seems "just like...." something else. But then I realize that all books are just like other books! I mean, can you imagine saying, Oh, I really hated The Stranger, I mean, it's obviously just trying to be Crime and Punishment... I thought War and Peace was just a cheap ripoff of Les Miserables! Don't read Baudelaire, he's just a French hack trying to be Blake. Not to mention of course that this sort of thing is often how publishers choose to market things, not how the book was written. I'll definitely check it out if I see it in stores. |

I am not sure what it's 'like' but I enjoyed it as a really keen observation of what it's like to grow up "Indian" in the west. I've an artist friend (who is getting quite renowned now) Divya Mehra and she has done documentary and photo galleries with a 'What is it to be 'Indian' themes. She's been to see family in India where she is not 'Indian' enough, etc. How it is to be first generation and the struggles of the second generation of NRI. Women, friendships, and culture struggles. I found it a wonderful and fast read.
