I got it from the local library for free and thought it wasn't bad. Not the best movie ever made but I enjoyed it more or less. It was surely better than alot of movies I've seen lately!

Saw it on the plane flying to India. Didn't like the film, or the way the plot kind of petered out, and didn't warm to any of the characters. If it's supposed to be a comedy, any attempted humour completely escaped me.

I liked it alot. I think it was a quirky little movie (just like all Anderson's others) that had little to do with India and more to do with the characters (and tried, as all his movies do) to throw in some subtle, yet profound (if you allow them to be) philosophical undertones.

I must say I, personally, thought the little scenes with the stewardess were shitty and unnecessary. But, it was a perfect example of the american mentality and the "nothing is sacred" behavior of americans. But, alas, I admit- I am a sentimental prude There is hardly an american movie anymore that does not sensationalize and glorify promiscuous sex, infidelity, and the one-night-stand.

I find his movies refreshing, though. I find them easy to watch, visually fascinating, and ridiculously quirky....and SO different. A nice break from the forcibly dark and deep or vain and shallow movies we have shoved down our throats on a regular basis.

I did see this movie at a place that serves you good food and pitchers of potent and delicious beer while you are watching...so, my perspective may be a bit skewed

I look forward to seeing it again- this time without brewskis. Maybe I will think it stinks if I watch it sober. I'll let you know

P.S. I thought someone earlier made an excellent point regarding the need to show how the behavior patterns are so profound and deeply ingrained that they persist even in a profoundly different environment....very keen insight!

Also, he uses a lot of stereotypes about India, without really "playing" on them or poking fun at them - he just goes with it.
Sure, the Indians in the movie were props, but most characters in any movie are props. The Darjeeling Limited wasn't about the Indians, it was about the brothers dealing with all their emotional and physical baggage while in India. And think about this, we've been to India twice, and are going back this year. We love it there, but our contact with Indians is very limited... not limited by lack of contact but by the superficiality of it. Some people go on package tours and come in contact with no one but hotel employees and guides. Some people go on business and only come in contact with company representatives and hotel employees. We go for adventure, history, shopping, eating, and since we're only around for a short time we meet people only on a superficial level.

It's like this: In America, I've never been in a shop or hotel where the employees cared about my personal life, and I really didn't care about theirs. I don't think the situation is any different anywhere you go. In each other's lives, we're all supporting characters, props, sidekicks. It's only in our intimate circles that we're really fleshed out in other people's consciousnesses. If my partner and I are remembered at all by anyone in India, it can best be hoped that we were "Those tourists who were two nice men and had some interest in our culture." But I'll probably have to settle for a generic "cheap American tourist" if I have to...
