The tiny "international" airport is a good example of what I meant when I said Anderson uses a lot of stereotypes without bothering to "play" with them at all, just parroting the official line from the US gov't: Other Countries Are Dirty Places Where Everything Sucks, And Bad Things Will Happen If You Go There. Sure, the guys "find themselves" and all at the end (another stereotype Anderson doesn't seem to question or poke fun at), but the message is clear: India Is Not For The Faint Of Heart. |

My quote: "But I'll bet there are some people who think the Darjeeling Limited is practically a documentary."

Sheesh! And I was sort joking when I said some people might think it's practically a documentary! |

Very rarely has a anyone dipicted India with a hint of what it is really like. Of course if you can can explain India you probably do not understand India but there was a movie Salaam Bombay which I thought was a somewhat realistic view of at least the streets scene of Bombay. When I saw it was like a documentary It was made in 1986. To refresh anyones mind here is a link to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salaam_Bombay! |

Darjeeling Lmt: Must see?
Hello!
Well, after a long wait, Wes Cravens Darjeeling Limited will be released in France this next week. I'm rather quite excited at being able to go the the cinema and watch it, but for those of you who HAVE already seen it: Was it worth it? Did it inspire you to go back? What did you think? I have the movie with me, managed to get my hands on a DVD screener and saw it about 3 weeks ago...... as far as i am concerned it was interesting and witty. The plot might be slightly old i.e dysfunctional family trying to 'be better' but presented in a nice manner.

Saw the film today. What was amusing - they enter the train in Jodhpur (main station) and travel and travel and travel, to arrive at Raika Bagh Palace station, still in Jodhpur!
(I'm not 100% certain because I couldn't pause the film in the theatre but the locations in the film are very familiar to me.) Familiar locations, familiar scenery - might have been the attraction for me. Knew nothing much about the film before I saw it. Thought I'd see Darjeeling in the movie. Was odd to see Irfan Khan playing a villager - might have been because I've been to such villages in the Thar, it was familiar too except for Irfan Khan! ![]()

I didn't mind it - I quite like the guys in it and it was funny. Not really about India though was it? Although there were some parts where you kind of recognised the kindness and ingenuity & warmth of the Indian people, it wasn't too stereotypical. I do like those dysfunctional family movies -
I agree Royal Tannenbaums is great.. and Little Miss Sunshine! Now I'd love to see THAT family travelling in India! |
