The Argumentative Indian - has anyone read this book?

Nobel Prize-winning Economist Amartya Sen has released a book called "Argumentative Indian - Writings on Indian History, Culture and Identity".

Curious to know if anyone has read this or read about this.

From a review in Guardian:

"This is a book that needed to have been written. The perception of India in the West and, indeed, among Indians themselves has never been more amorphous as it is now. The Argumentative Indian will provide a new dimension and perspective to that perception. It would be no surprise if it were to become as defining and as influential a work as Edward Said's Orientalism."

Thumbs up

Looks like a fantastic book with a mix of India's heritage, culture, identity,.....

Two days back The Hindu carried a front page photo of the prime minister Singh releasing the book.

Yesterday there was this 'Hard Talk' interview with Sen in BBCWorld.

I'm impressed with what he has said Some thing defenitely new. At least the mirror is placed in the right direction.

I'm ordering the book Not waiting for the cheap paperback to be released or the pirated ones to surface. Now it's a bit expensive (@ Rs 585 with India Times online bookstore)

At least I should be arguing better after reading the The Argumentative Indian

My expectations about the book is high. Amartya Sen, add one more fan to your list

The Indian listed price is Rs650.

The Indiatimes online offer is for Rs585 (free shipping), if you are their book club member it's Rs488.

I always buys books from them (online), which is pretty cheaper than going to a shop and buy. So if the shop is quoting Rs650 or so, consider the online offer...

Well, it sells for a cool £17.50 here in the UK, which is a 130% premium to the Indian price. (Maybe buying it in India and shipping it to Europe would be cheaper?)

My book has arrived yesterday

So far so good.

I'm wondering how the hell they are able to sell at cheaper price in India. The book is not Indian edition. It's printed in UK. The pound price printed is 25. Next to that they've stuck a label which says Rs650. They are actually selling in india for Rs585.

(Tipoff all Sen fans: There is going tobe an interview with Sen at NDTV at 10 in the night on Monday (8 aug) )
