The Argumentative Indian. (book)
I have managed to complete Amartya Sen's latest offering:"The Argumentative Indian: Indian History, Culture & Identity ".
Sen has marshalled facts and historical evidences through exhaustive research to show that India had democratic practices from ancient time. He convinces the readers about "Indian Heritage of Heterodoxy " that is, tolerance for diversity; plurality and secular traditions during Mughal Emperor Akbar's reign while Europe was busy with the Inquisition; dissent during Rama's time as contained in Hindu epic "The Ramayana " an agnostic scholar questioning Rama and advicing Him to eskew suspicion towards his wife, Sita; and the Buddhist emperor the Ashoka laying down the "rules for tolerance and debate " before the Third Buddhist Council, Before Christ. The Argumentative Indian is a mind boggling revelation about India, its heritage, cultural moorings, and the emerging identity. I would recommend the book for all interested in exploring India. ![]()
