Tamil / Telugu Movie Recommendations
Hi
Though I do not understand the language, I have just started to watch some South Indian Movies (Tamil, Telegu ..) using the subtitles ...
I have watched Boyz,Bomarillu,Happy Days ... all these I loved a lot
I want to watch more .. but I do not know much about the film names
can anyone please recommend me with the the Movie Names of some good South Indian Movies ?? I am mainly interested in Romantic and/or teenage,college-life movies having fun and comedies ... if there is also a very good interesting movie in Action, Thriller or Drama ... I'll also try to watch that ..

Kadhal
one of my favorites, it's Tamil.
"Wealthy schoolgirl Iswarya (Sandhya) falls head over heels in love with working-class mechanic Murugan (Bharath). When her influential landlord father arranges a marriage for her with a more suitable match, Iswarya persuades Murugan to elope with her to Chennai. After settling down and finding a house, the newlyweds are tricked into returning home to Madurai, where family scheming throws their relationship into serious jeopardy."
it's about a romance, but definitely not a comedy.

Of the ones you've watched, Bommarillu is a favorite.
In Telugu, I recommend (random):
Godavari
Kshana Kshanam
Swarnakamalam
Pokiri - Remade as 'Wanted' in Hindi with Salman Khan.
Ashta Chemma
Gamyam- said to be 'inspired' by Motorcycle Diaries, it's an OK movie.
I watched the much hyped hit movie of last year Arundhati, but other than Anushka, nothing else interesting or fantastic.

Some of my fav South Indian movies:Anand, Godavari - the same director as in Happy Days (Sekhar Kammula), simple romantic movies
He also prodused Avakai Biryani, which is a great movie alsoAnniyan, Ayan - pure "stupid" masala tamil movies, but very funny and bright, with good music and lots of romantic.
Anukokunda Oka Roju - unusual Telugu triller with a girl in a main role.
Happy, Parugu - romantic "college life" telugu movie with Allu Arjun, who is one of the best dancers in Tollywood
Chandamama - another funny romantic Telugu movie with young heroes and heroines
Iruvar, Kannathil Muthamittal - Mani Ratnam's Tamil drama/melodramas, the last one is my fav from this genious director
Autograph - great Tamil movie, a bit low-pace, but very romantic. Won a National Award in 2005
Paruthiveeran, Poo, Pithamagan, Naadodigal - great "small" Tamil movies, I just love them!!! I love that in South Indian cinema you can see indian village life - quite rare location in Bollywood movies. All this movies have very good and unusual scripts, director's work and actor's perfomances.
Varsham, Yamadonga - funny Telugu masala with romantic edge of course
Lots of music and dances too Past the point of no return...

Surprised to see a thread on movies. My recommendation to you is Anbe Sivam(Love is God). Kamalahasan's movie. One of those types you will get attached to it easily, a bit philosophical especially those dialogues between the two characters in the movie (kamal, a communist-flag bearer and madhavan, an ad maker, a hardcore imperialist)

Nice ones. Just wanted to add 'Raam'. A decent thriller from Amir sultan, director of paruthiveeran. Wouldn't mind recommending 'Naan Kadavul', a movie based on the life of aghoris(a sect of saints who live in kaasi) from Bala, director of Pithamagan. The latter one is bit gory though

actually,i love naan kadavul but didnt recommend it because of its hard hitting nature which might proove too much for an average viewer.you have a good movie sense man.i suggest u should see some malayalam movies which are always a treat for true cinema lovers.Ignore if u r a keralite

I'm second for that. Like all Bala's movies (except Nanda, perhaps - it's OK but not great), but never recommend it, esp for romantic natures
I myself nearly stopped watching Naan Kadavul after a half an hour... It was too "intence"
ayan is a good movie in the recent... watch "thulluvatho ilamai", something like Boyz...

Oh Yes, That movie is not for a weak hearted folks.Thankfully you walked out of the movie. If you would have seen the complete movie, you would really passed out.
But altogether, its a damn good movie.

arunfox, thanks for the suggestion. Malayalam movies are way ahead in terms of quality and script. But unfortunately the quality that existed in the 90's is fading thanks to their part in trying to imitate movies from other states. Manichitrathazhu always remains my favorite.
And the climax of paruthiveeran has been the most tragical out of all. I skipped it thrice before watching it finally.
sry for being off-topic, manichitrathazhu can be taken as n recommendation.

I have seen the complete movie - I nearly stopped, but not stopped. I like Bala, even though I think he's not everyone's cup of tea

Yes, I don't know if I can rewatch it some time. But anyway I love the movie, and South Indian village was captured beautifully! And I'm second for recommending Manichitrathazhu, Shobana is my all-time-favorite
do watch the movie Roja(tamil), superb movie which am sure u will watch it repeatedly. it was directed by maniratnam and A.R.Rahman's first musical venture too. Dont miss it.
