I haven't watched TOO many, but as a general rule, anything by Maniratnam (Mani Ratnam) is good. Some that immediately come to mind are "Bombay", "Kannathil Mutthamital", "Alaipayuthey" and "Nayakan". Also, check out this year's "Autograph".

Oh yeah, watch the movies that you like the songs of! At the very least, the music should entertain you!

& movies by K Balachander. It's more socially oriented & you might need help in explaining what the story is all about.

If you are looking for good music then you can opt any of Shankar or Maniratnam Movies... most of them are AR Rahman movies.

If you need comedy movies, you can try Thenaali, Michael Madana Kaama Rajan, Pammal K Sambandam etc... All excellent comedy movies by Kamalhaasan. But you might need help in understanding the slang though.

In the recent past, 'PithaaMagan' and 'Azhagiya Theeye' have got good story lines.

"Alay Payuthay" is far and away the most popular Tamil film music. Backing automobiles and mobile phones play "Yaro Yarodi."

A couple good Chollywood films: "Ithayathai Thirudathey" - a love story, good songs and quality production. "Kadhalikka Neramillai" - a wacky comedy, lots of fun and very colorful but subtitles are a bit wierd. If you haven't already seen it, I highly recommend "The Terrorist" - beautiful and moving "art" movie.

PS Can't wait to check out some of the other films mentioned here. I see a lot of Bollywood films, but Tamil (and other S. Indian) cinema has become very compelling since visiting there.

I’m a fan of Kamal Hasan. He is a moviemaker /actor of his own class. Though Tamil, his fan circles are elsewhere. Tamil people are in mad love with Rajani. Now a days it seems Rajani is having a growing fans in Japan.

Each of Kamal’s movies are different. He is highly experimental. His masterpiece move is Therar Makan (Son of the village chief).

The life, sprit, love, vengeance…everything exist in a small Tamil village is captured candidly. A must see I would say…..

One of the specialities of kamal hasan is, he's learnt the art of touching the viewer's heart n make them to get involved in his movies....I wud like to mention some of his master pieces like Gunaa, Mahanadhi, recently Virumaandi... esp the storyline in virumaandi stands totally different from the normal ones. In this movie, the total story revolves ard the hero(kamal) n his rival..It just depicts the story in their own perspective,,, where the rival depicts kamal as an evil person, in the other kamal tells the story where the real character of the hero comes into pic.. I's simply movies by this one....
i wud like to know if this 's the first try or anyone already tried this tech b4, like moving the story in the actor's perspective.....
