Tabla Masters of Today

I would like this thread to list tabla performances in India of the current-day masters. I cannot find much info on the web, so local information is a must!

Such masters as Shabbir Nisar, Ilmas Hussain Khan and anyone else you could recommend (less keen on zakir).

My son learnt for about a year and a half from Shabbir Nissar. I don't know too much about the intricacies of the tabla myself, but it was a treat to watch Shabbir Nissar performing.

It would take something to better Allarakha though.

also check out http://kippen.org/masters.html

some of the players are contemporary.

His son, Zakir Hussein is pretty excellent! One of the few tabla players who knows how to play with South Indian musicians, too.

I don't know much about N. Indian musicians, but Kishen Maharaj is a favourite of mine. I once sat spellbound through an entire concert of solo tabla by him ---and I find too much tabla irritating

I don't know if Zakir Hussain lives in the States, but he's in a band called Planet Drum put together by Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart. They made a few cd's that are really nice. They also have drummers from Africa, Latin America in the band. They just did some shows here a few months ago. If your into percussion music, you should check out their cd. It's really nice music!

taufiq qureshi is another one to check out....he is brother of zakir if that matters...

i like my tabla players in jugalbandi with other instruments...rarely go to a solo concert to be honest.

the chemistry that zakir shares with some of the more wellknown names is amazing...and i think it will be difficult to see that from some of the newer names you mention...though i am sure they will establish their own relationships in time...

have seen zakir perform with various artistes
  • with l subramanium (violin - carnatic & fusion)
  • with his brother l shankar (double violin - carnatic and fusion)
  • with shiv kumar sharma (santoor)
  • with hari prasad chaurasia (flute)
  • with u srinivas (mandolin-carnatic & fusion)
  • with pandit jasraj (hindustani vocal)..
...tell you what...i would give anything to watch some of these jugalbandi's again....

back to taufiq qureshi, heard him with brothers ganesh & kumaresh (violin - carnatic & fusion) and he was really really good too....

------------------------------------
another addition is yogesh samsi
saw him perform with buddhaditya mukherjee (sitar)...and he was reeely good...

another addition is sanjay deshpande.
saw him accompany veena sahasrabuddhe (hindustani vocal)....

anindo chatterjee is another name you want to look for. havent heard him but his name crops up here and there.

I bet they were all great concerts, GC! A fair assortment of Northern and Southern artists. Zakir Hussein has the knowledge of carnatic percussion as well (apparently his father did too).

He can be a big showman on stage: but in classical concerts he is amazingly humble, just producing great music.

Younger brother --- might have been a great doctor or engineer, but I guess the family gave him no choice. I'm afraid he didn't get past the showmanship stage last time I saw him, and stood out as the least competent musician on stage, and they were not all big names. Musician friends in the audience, wiser than I, told me that a lot of what he did was technically just wrong. So I'm not a taufiq qureshi fan: a few gimmicks stretched out for as long as possible.

Planet Drum (there were a couple of albums, but I don't think it is an ongoing band, rather one of those many Grateful Dead offshoots) also featured Ghatam player Vikku Vinaiakram (I can never spell that...), a percussionist of huge skill.

I think by far Zakir is the best. Not so much in the traditional sense, but the way he adapts is style to almost any kind of music and what other maestros have to say about him. If he had not been classically trained by dad, I think would have been shunned by the fundamentalists for his versatility.

I would highly recommmend a documentary -- The Speaking Hand. its impossible to find. Bet there is a clip on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjjSZw4gr98

Thanks for the 8 replies, but can anyone actually answer my question?

I missed the fact that you are looking for performances.

I suggest your local newspaper!

Well i'm located in the south at the moment (kerala) and then i'm going to chennai early/mid december, then onto kolkota for the dover lane music conference and then spend a few months in 'the north', but in general ANY city, if you have heard about a tabla performance, please list it for all to see.

I'm dying to see some live tabla as this is one of the reasons i came to India!

How about shabbir nisar playing in Hyderabad???

shabbir nisar, last i knew (2004), spent his time between the US and hyderabad. he is attached to two music schools in hyderabad.

not aware of any performances in hyderabad now. nothing in the newspapers

like nick says, you have to keep a keen eye on local newspapers. there is usually not too much advance publicity, or hype, surrounding many of these kinds of performances, unfortunately.

Chennai bursts into musical life in mid-december with a music festival possibly the biggest in the world. Thousands of performances over a month or so --- but it will mostly be carnatic, and the mridangam will feature rather than the tabla.

But, if you are passing through, pick up The Hindu newspaper every day for the concert listings for that day. Check out http://www.kutcheribuzz.com/decseason2006/ for listings, which will be published as they become available, at least for the major concerts.
