106 days to go
I would love to read up on Indian culture and history; religions, political movements, etc. The guide books are a bit too sketchy for me. Any recommendations?

No, not at all, just thought there's more pointers there already than I myself could possibly handle. A personal favorite re: India before the Moghuls is A.L. Basham's The Wonder That Was India, I don't know about its availability in the west but you can get it in India. Makes a wonderful background reading to many of the places you'll encounter, even if it's a bit of a dry and academic affair.

101 more days to go...

try Culture Shock! India by Gitanjali Kolanad. It is a book that was recommended to me by yoga instructors who go every year to India. Some of the chapters include: "India Profile" (about the land, languages, economy, history); "Perceptions" (about karma, caste, dharma, etc.); "Religious Beliefs"; and also doing business in India, city living, street smarts, do's and don'ts, etc. etc.

Although he has his detractors I would recommend trying some of William Dalrymple's books. If nothing else they are an easy read and usually thoroughly (and ofen personally) researched.

Try "India Unbounded - Gurhcaran Das", "Karma Kola - Geeta Metha", "Discovery of India - Nehru"
