Sri Lanka book suggestions

Hi, I just bought a ticket to India & got the unexpected bonus of a stop-over in Sri Lanka. I know little about this place &, in contrast with India, there seems to be a dearth of (widely read) literature on Sri Lanka beyond the guidebooks. I hoped that someone might suggest one or two books to read to aquaint myself with this intruiging isle.
The book(s) could be travellogue, fiction, history, whatever. It doesn't have to be very recent, although an insight into the seperatist troubles might, I guess, enhance my understanding. Any books which look at Sri Lanka alongside India would also provide useful.
So, any suggestions?

"Anil's Ghost" by Michael Ondaatje is set in Sri Lanka.

"Story-Wallah" is a collection of short stories edited by Shyam Selvadurai, who was born in Sri Lanka; it's very good.
