Songs/Music that reminds you of India

I was just listening to indiamike's favourite music and a song was played that got me thinking about India (it doesn't take much).

The song is about drinking at lunchtime and not wanting to go back to work..

"Pour me something tall and strong, make it a hurricane before I go insane, - It's only half past twelve but I don't care, - It's five o'clock somewhere."

When it's half past twelve in England it is five o'clock in India.

The song is by Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett and called

"It's Five O'clock Somewhere"

Anyone else have a particular song or music that gets you thinking of India?

Not quite the same theme, but Bob Marley reminds me of Nepal.

That stupid "Ain't Going to Goa" song. Reminds me of being in Goa and having a room next to somone who played that over and over like it was the last record on earth.

Your not chewing tobacco yet Steven are you?

My all-time favorite - Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. After that - Rajah Hindustani. Best listened to in a rickshaw.

Wink

'Chunari, Chunari' by Abhijeet from Moonson wedding... or 'Haan maine bhi pyar kiya' form the movie with the same name. (A three hour marathon in the mountains of Switzerland.)

Otherwise, any beatles song with indian influence... 'Let it be'

There's a couple of records that remind me of India =
- Dark side of the moon : cause my neighbour in a mahamallipuram guesthouse got the player on repeat .(for two weeks)
- White ladder - David Gray : cause i heard it a thousand times in a restaurant in Patnem
- Rapture - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan : must have been the only record in my hotel in Karachi (reminds me of India, cause i was stuck in Karachi for 3 days, while flying to India, thanks PIA)
- Buddha Bar I, II & III: my hammock knows why .
- Blind man's Zoo - 10.000 maniacs : cause i first heard it in Varkala & still like it .

I am one of those people to whom music has virtually no meaning, I couldn't care if I never hear another popular song in my life, I can put up with Abba, I can listen to the Beatles (but I would rather not) I tolerate classical music if I really have to.

So, having set the stage, I was in the Rak International in Delhi early this year waiting for a minor operation on my toe. Its was cold outside and I had no heating so I spent quite a lot of time in bed smoking dope and watching television, a movie came on, 'O Brother where Art Thou', after about half an hour I noticed the music, the Big Rock Candy Mountain. I remember this from years ago, maybe my father sang it to me?
I hastily scribbled down the movie name and when I was in Bangkok on the way home, I went down to Pat Pong and after asking at about five pirate shops found the CD of the soundtrack!!

Now it is the only CD I have in the player, I actually had to buy the player to play it as I didn't have a CD machine, only the computer. It has taken the place in my heart of the only tape I have in the car (the soundtrack from Pulp Fiction) so now its 'O Brother' in the house, 'Pulp' in the car, Am I becoming musically aware?

Oh and BTW, 'O Brother' always reminds me of sitting up in bed in Delhi with a sore toe...

Me Again (are you allowed two posts on the same subject?). I remember spending New Years night in 2000 in the Hotel Tibet in Gantok, Sikkim, dancing to Abba and Boney M, played by a live band. And I can't dance!

normally I am disdainful of the "J.Lo" genre of music, but I must say her "Jenny from the Block" song completely reminds me of Bangalore-i think every bar and radio in every shop/internet cafe played it incessantly! So now when I here that song I am actually fond of it, as it reminds me of so many great memories. Also "White Ladder" by David Gray (I bought it for less than $5 in India) which I played over and over on my walkman while riding sidesaddle on the back of my husbands motorcycle helmetless...Heavy sigh, wish I was there instead of getting ready for bed here and anticipating another 60 hour work week. Ugh.

That's why I have fond memories of "It Wasn't Me" by Shaggy... I spent 6 weeks scuba diving from the island of Utila in Honduras in 2001 and heard this song at least 6 times every day. It's pretty bad but I get incredibly sentimental when I hear it. When I left the island I had a 12 hour layover at Miami airport and ended up buying the CD - listened to it over and over while feeling sad over leaving and painting my toenails blue.

Forgot to post songs that remind me of India... I've got the soundtracks to Monsoon Wedding and Lagaan which are great (just put Lagaan on... if you haven't seen the movie, please do)plus a couple of Nitin Sawhney CDs, Asian Dub Foundation, Punjabi MC, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (although that reminds me more of Pakistan... have also got a few really cheesy Arabic dance albums from when I was there too) and various compilations with sub-continent bents. I buy far too much music but.... music matters.
