"Sikkim", 1971, a Documentary film by Satyajit Ray

I am pleased to have found the long-lost Satyajit Ray documentary "Sikkim" on Youtube, after it had been banned for such a long time:

http://youtu.be/qwZcWZn-wt8

It was made by Ray in 1971 but has hardly ever been shown. This is the quote on Youtube about it:

Quote:
Sikkim is a 1971 Indian documentary about the nation of Sikkim, directed by Satyajit Ray. The documentary was commissioned by the Chogyal (King) of Sikkim at a time when he felt the sovereignty of Sikkim was under threat from both China and India. Ray's documentary is about the sovereignty of Sikkim. The film was banned by the government of India, when Sikkim merged with India in 1975. In 2000, the copyright of the film was transferred to the Art and Culture Trust of Sikkim. The ban was finally lifted by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in September 2010. In November 2010 the director of the Kolkata film festival stated that upon filming the documentary for the first time, he received an injunction from the court of Sikkim again banning the film.

Maybe it will be withdrawn soon, so hurry to watch it!

TD, please pass along my thanks to him.

Having just finished watching the film, I can see (two specific instances actually) why the MEA would ban it, but I see no reason why the Sikkim Court would reimpose the ban last year.

What do you think was the reason? Something to do with China and Tibet?

"people from India" (at roughly the 34 min mark) and "nation of Sikkim" (this one I didn't keep track of).

And, I think i heard a reference to "Monarchy of Sikkim" (or something like that) ... that might also have raised the MEA's hackles.

Not to hijack your thread TD, another film of Ray (though not banned, but rare to find) is Piku'r Diary. If you have not seen it, and can find it somewhere, watch it.

It was pretty controversial when it was released (not kid friendly), but I managed to sneak in and watch it when I was pretty young.

Adding a little fuel to the off-topic discussion on 'Pikur diary'. Its based on a literary work by Ray himself, the style of which is absolutely brilliant. Its written in a way as a small kid would write a diary (with the spelling and grammatical errors)...a superb read!!

Back to the documentary: Some incredible photography there. Loving the use of the sepia tone. However, no glimpse of Kanchenjungh till now
