I thought Crowe would be good because he would have to be a believeable hard man. Johnny Depp- 10 stone and 5ft 5 doesn't cut it for me i'm afraid. I assume sboivin has advised swe mats re Heath Ledger? How about a bulked up Ewan mcGregor? Daniel Craig? I do like the idea of Sean Penn though.

Looks like Penn's got alot on his plate for the next year or so. Enjoyed his early role as a druggie turned informant in 'The Falcon and the Snowman' ..... the Shantaram role would be not too different a character from that.

No arguments here! If he don't get it, he should at least get hired as a "train consultant".

Well, I know Ledger is dead, but he would be perfect for the role! I'm not sure about Ewan mcGregor, I like him, but i can't see him play roberts though. I still think Willem Dafoe is the best person for the job...

Willem Dafoe ... not a bad idea ... he is a Second Series (at least) Ashtangi so he is extremely fit! Recently I watched again "The Last Temptation of Christ" by Martin Scorsese and Dafoe was brilliant. He can certainly do the starved and suffering look. What about that actor who played in Sean Penn's latest film, "Into the Wild"? I can't remember his name right now. But he is too young. I don't see Sean Penn in this role of Shantaram although I think he is a wonderful actor and director. Somebody Australian would be good, no? But who?

Anyone see Nick Cave in "The Proposition" for which he wrote the scenario?

Very good flick! Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone. David Gulpilil. Solid.

Highly recommended is Rabbit Proof Fence and The Tracker, both Aussie.

First time I saw Nick Cave was in 'Wings Of Desire'. Electrifying at the time.

According to IMDB, initial filming starts in September, or after the monsoon. Hopefully that's the case.

Surprised nobody mentioned Eric Bana - he's Australian, versatile, and knows how to play a right hard mo-fo - anybody seen 'Chopper'?

He would be perfect for this role.....

What about Tom Green who starred in Freddy got Fingered?? He would be good. Or Borat, that guy from Kazakstan who made a film about himself last year. If either of those 2 cannot be got my vote would have to be Hal Holbrook, he played the old guy in Into the Wild and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. And Javier Bardem should make a guest appearance in character as Anton Chigurh when they go off to fight in Afghanistan. And please if i had only 1 wish it would be for Angelina Jolie to play the swiss chick he falls for, but she would have to stay in her lizard costume from Beuwolf cos that was cool. Actually i think i should direct the movie.

Viggo Mortensen I'd say. He has the blonde hair and grey eyes.
