Shantaram: The Movie

Johnny Depp is doing the lead role as Lindsey in Shantaramwich will be out on theaters in 2009. How do you guys think this will work out? Do you think Johnny Depp will do a good job?

He's got alot of 'dirty little sewer' in his acting repertoire ..... so the main role should be solid!

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to spread this sort of gossip, but last I heard (and let's just say I'm definitely in the business of knowing), Shantaram was on permanent hold and probably not happening anytime soon. The whole project has fallen through for the forseeable future.

But Johnny Depp would have been dreamy...

Gregory Roberts is a large macho sort of guy - can't see Depp cutting it ...

Actually, if that's a photo of him on the Shantaram website - Depp might well have him beat by a hair in the macho department.

That movie is going no where for more than 6 months now. In a recent interview of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, he did mention that he had no clue about the direction in which the movie was heading.

A shame, as although I thought a lot of the book was a bit silly and ego centric it was ideal for a film surely? I always saw Russell Crowe in the role. On the home page the pic of the author certainly looks a tad more macho than Peak's link. Then again my wee 5 year old niece looks harder than he does in that pic.

I for some reason cannot see either of them being 100% for the role....the author reminds me of some actor but i just cant recall at the moment...this one is going to drive me batty for a bit now..

Funny, I can see either one of them doing it, easily. Depp has tremendous range and focus within a role. Crowe might be a little better as I seem to remember the writer saying he wasn't particularly good looking. Depp's body would be more believable than Crowe's chunky look.

Nicholas cage is never best for a role!

I'm not sure about Woody. He could be really good, but I still think Depp or Crow would do a better job. I sure hope that shantaram will make it to the screen, it could be really good!
