My favourite Indian CD at the moment (although he lives in Britain) is Nitin Sawhney "Beyond Skin" - picked it up second hand a few weeks ago. And I also recently bought the Lagaan soundtrack which isn't as annoying as most Bollywood music - great movie, too.

tabla duet by zakir hussain and his dad (ustad alla something ?) is a very nice tabla album- lots of complicated rhythms. a lot more authentic than nitin sawnhey's beyond skin (still a very good album though). it's inspired me to buy some tablas on my forethcomming visit. anyone know best place to buy some and best way off getting them back to uk?

There is a bunch of compilatons from Zakir and the Late Ustad Allah Rakha all pretty decent.

Not to sway from the original question, but there is a good store in Connaught Place in Delhi on the north outer ring called Hare Krishna's which has quality tablas. They made me a custom set which was real sweet. I had them build me a set to my specs, and then picked them up a day before my flight home and took them on the plane with me. In Old Delhi there is quite a few good shops also.

I also suggest if your studying tabla there is also a good book/cassette/video by Allah Rakha still available at the Ali Akbar College of Music (Link to Book)

As with music, I am getting older and no longer as hip as I feel I am and still like some of the older Bill Laswell/Material stuff. Zakir Hussain plays most of the tabla on the recordings.

Material- Hallucination Engine is a good album, though a little jazzy sometimes. Great spoken word by William S. Burroughs.

Bill Laswell- Hear No Evil- A little slower but still good

Bill Laswell-City of Light- Spoken word album featuring Lori Carson-very ambient, good tabla, spooky, and haunting. Definite must have if your visiting Varanasi and planning on doing any Ganga. Tabla by Trilok Gurtu.

I also still like this bill laswell stuff a lot...I guess he must have made 100 `s of records....
I was just wondering if india has such a developing rock scene like say thailand,in these days you can get really really good rock music from there, mostly in thai language!!!
you should try the album parchaijaan from a group called kashti..
quite nice,or maybe a group called agosh with their funny song paisa!
I m still waiting for that sound of indan headbanging bands..)
but also indian pop music is getting better, but still it s still like taking acid or so..sometimes...
I still remember the year 1994 when I ve seen Jethro Tull live in Madras..what an experiience!!!!!
any more suggestions or storys about music and india or indian music are welcome...
maybe somebody met kula shaker in goa???
or allanis morrissette?
