River Dog by Mark Shand

I recently read the book "River Dog" by Mark Shand a travel writer working for the BBC. It is about his attempt rafting down the entire Brahmaputra from as close to its source as possible, down to its mouth at Bangladesh.
It makes for exciting reading. His portrayal of the Brahmaputra is awe inspiring. He explains a lot of history behind the Brahmaputra. I learnt that it is the greatest and the most mysterious of all rivers. An enormous amount of research was done by the british to plot its course. I was particularly touched by Kinthup the surveyor/monk sent by the british to plot the river course. A great read if you like travelouges.

then try 'travels with my elephant' , that's even more fun. Do you know he trained to become a mahout too. You'll find his other titles on Amazon.

And I thought he is a more of a page three hack, some blue blood and Camilla Parker's brother, then a travel writer, his IQ on India otherwise be at par with a casual lurker on IM if he wasn't on and on about the kings & queens he knows here by first name. Read both of his works and found nothing poignant about them. Wish he were less contrived about 'fixing' the whole jig.

Atkins, any given day makes a heartfelt reading IMHO.

I just couldn't get into the book, I read about 50 pages.

I bought the book because I was going to Assam and wanted to cross the Bramaputra near Dibrugarh, but I never got far enough into the book for it to be of any use to me, even when I was in Bramaputra, I never got back to the book.

Though it has to be said that I'm not a great reader, I have probably started reading about 200 books, but only finished about 20.
