She's playing a solo show next thursday in New York at Joe's Pub and then the next night at Carnagie Hall with her father Ravi. I plan to go to Carnigie Hall. I've been a fan of Ravi's since a teenager but have never gone to see him. Would like to see him once before he's gone. He must be in his late 80's?
May he live to be 110!

Excuse me.... 120!

I'm tempted to board a bus and see them again. Maybe I'll see you in New York! You just can't find music like this anywhere, I think he is around 82? I'm not sure,

I did a search and he was born April 7th, 1920. So that makes him 85.
I'll give a look 4 u in New York as your not very easy to miss!
If you know what I mean!

Yeah! Ravi had an affair with a woman from Texas and Norah spent her life living in Texas (I think )

Yes Ravi Shanker is a genius no doubt on this. But I will reserve my comments on his daughter' music. She is very very fortunate to be Ravi's daughter & like a doting father he is propping her up. I saw her at the George memorial concert & was disappointed. There are quite a few budding sitarists who could have done well if they had a father like Ravi.
This is solely my point of view.

I share jyoti's point of view. many of these indian maestros are propping up their own kid's carreers. Pretty sad to see this kind of nepotism run rampant among indian artists. They have tried to justify it by saying that the indian arts are dying as their is a lack of students who take it seriously. and given than these arts have to learned from a guru (and not a book on video), they are concerned that the arts will die out.

Music like all art forms are subjective. If you feel good listening to some music you call it good music. Now when we talk of classical art we talk about things like Gharana, Grammer etc. etc. Conforming to these improvising make classical music classical.
Anushka has inherited her father's glamour & she looks gorgeous on stage which is a sure fire combination for show biz. But I doubt I will find her solo at Dover lane & places like that.

Sorry to hear that the band was so disappointing live. Maybe they're getting bored of playing the same songs over and over again...

I understand the concern about nepotism, and would also add that these days, there's not a very strong correlation between commercial success in the American music industry and having real talent. Unfortunately for performers of original music who want to make a living on their own terms, it's 90% promotion and 10% talent.

That said, I think from the standpoint of sheer musicianship Norah Jones' band's (recorded) music more than stands up on its own merits. You're right that it can't really be compared to Indian classical in any way, but on the other hand, how often these days do you hear pop tunes with jazz chords? Her band's approach is eclectic and deeply rooted in all that's come before in American music, from blues to country to jazz.

Just my opinion. I didn't want to miss an opportunity to stand up for someone who succeeds in the music industry who also happens to be talented, even if she didn't succeed BECAUSE she is talented.

RTree, i agree with your comments about Norah Jones. she made it in the world of mainstream music aginst all the odds. Record labels did not want to market her music, as they did not know which genre to market it under.

But, when I go to a concert that advertises a maestro in performance, thats what I expect to see. Not to one of their kids performing.

I've never seen such ads, but unfortunately I believe it. They might as well have different careers.
