Cool Purchasing a SITAR in South India

Hi all,

I'm travelling from NY to India tomorrow with the fam. We're moving around the south, concentrating in the Bangalore and Mysore regions.

I love music of all kinds, and have been playing guitar and bass for ~9 years. I'm looking to purchase an electric sitar around where I am staying, and I'm wondering if anybody has any advice. I've done research on other sites, but I'm just wondering if anybody has anything to say on this subject.

My feeling is that you would get the best in sitars up north, it being a Hindustani instrument, rather than carnatic.

But I'm sure you'll find them for sale in the Chennai music shops...

My aunt checked out a few music shops by her place in Mysore and said that there were some quality sitars there....but we're going to Delhi in early january, I guess I shouldn't make any decisions till I see what both sides have to offer! Your reasoning makes sense...the North would seem more promising. Thanks Nick-H!

hi, if you are in delhi and you don't mind paying a bit more, i would recommend getting your sitar from rikhi ram. they provide instruments for all major artists, their shop is very cool, lots of pictures. it is at connaought place. but be careful fakes around their shop some with the same shop name trying to get you to their place. rikhi's ram web site is
