Thumbs up Prem Joshua

Just heard a couple of albums by this guy for the first time and really like what I hear. Mainly sitar-based but a lovely fusion of all different kinds of Eastern music and very accessible to this Western ear.

The albums I've got so far are 'Yatri' (my favourite - opening track 'Saroja', particularly) and 'Water Down The Ganges' (with Manish Vyas). I heard 'Shiva Moon' too but that sounded a bit techno and didn't really grab me.

Can anyone recommend anything else?

He was playing in Goa last season - Maybe he'll be back this year. He had a small gig at the back of a restaurant in Vagator.

Annie - if you hear about this happening again will you do me a MASSIVE favour and PM me? I'd love to see him live.

His website ( http://www.premjoshua.com/index.htm ) gives quite a lot of info on his gigs in Europe / USA etc but doesn't give any info on his gigs in India. I guess they're more of a spur-of-the-moment sort of thing - exactly the sort of gig I like, really.

Sure, Funkenstein, I will try to remember. But you would do better to be in contact with Aquaman who is more of a fan of Prem than I am (although I like his stuff a lot). He is here in IM.

Prem Joshua is very cool, I have most of his CDs, and use his music in my yoga classes.

Doc, check out a dude named Girish and his CD called Reveal -- awesome!! (same type of music....) Doc, have you listened to Jai Uttal, also? If not, check him out -- if you love Prem, you'll love Jai.

Thankyou Annie and yogagal - I'll definitely keep an eye out for any Prem Joshua gigs in Goa this Winter. I've just noticed that there's an email address on that website for info on Indian concerts - I'll drop them a line.

No, yogagal, I've never heard of either of those guys but will seek them out. Thanks for the tip.

Which Prem Joshua CD should I go for next, then? 'Yatri' and 'Water Down The Ganges' are both great - can anyone recommend other good ones in a similar style? The techno-ey ones don't really do it for me.

Cool

Last year i saw Prem Jushua play in the Laguna Anjuna during the spiritual film festival. One of the Goan newspaper had a full pagereview about him with his story the day before.

Do you also have the famous Buddha Bar series of Claude Challe? (They sell illegal copies everywhere in India) Claude has more cd projects which most of are awesome. You should read some of his biography, he's the best!

Lots of great recommendations on this thread - thanks everyone.

Devonlasses - that's a great site. Unfortunately my connection at this end isn't the best so I'm having some difficulty getting the tracks to play, but I've bookmarked it for the future. Thanks again.

Nice one, somnath. That second link's almost like a 'Best Of' compilation.

Priya - If you've never heard him before, try clicking on 'Saroja Pt.1' on that list - my favourite song of his that I've heard so far.

Now that's a nice bit of music Doc kinda reminds me of the soundtrack to Bhaji On The Beach

For some slightly more upbeat fusion look for Saaz!!
