Pre-trip research

Two months and counting...

I want to use this time to read before I travel. Interested in reading about Indian history and cultural differences.

Of late, I have read Roy's The God of Small Things. I love Rushdie and last year read The Ground Beneath Her Feet.

Experienced travellers, readers please let me know what you might recommend fiction and non-ficiton books exploring such themes as noted above.

Just to keep things tidy, I'm going to shift this thread into the books and literature section.

There are hundreds of book recommendations in the section - enough to keep you reading for years!

Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance is one of the best books I've ever read. It's a sad tale of India in the 1970s and a true testament to hope and the human spirit. I've started reading Yann Martel's Life of Pi recently and it starts out, entertainingly, in India with the author's playful use of the word "bamboozled" with an employee of the Indian railways.

Both writers are Canadians. As an unknown Canadian author (and perhaps, word hack) myself I'm insanely jealous of the success and quality of these books... both are worth reading!
